PREFACE.
Our First Annual City Directory of Indianapolis is herewith presented to our numer. ous patrons, with a consciousness that no effort has been spared to insure the fullest completeness of the information herein contained. We are confident that there has never been a more thorough and systematic canvass of the city made. Mistakes will occur, and to whoever may find an error, the Publishers can only answer, "to err is human." Every effort has been made to obtain every name that should be represented in a City Directory.
The "Classified Business Directory" represents the business and manufacturing in- terests of the city more correctly than has ever been before represented by such a medium. The "Miscellaneous Directory" furnishes much information, useful to the citizen as well as to the stranger visiting the city.
Our thanks are due our numerous patrons for their liberal support.
Respectfully,
SWARTZ & TEDROWE, Publishers.

HISTORY OF INDIANAPOLIS.
Indianapolis is situated on the east bank of White river, in latitude 39º 55'. On the 6th of January, 1821, the Legislature confirmed this as the choice of the Commission- ers in selecting a location for the Capitol of the State. Thus sprang into being one of the greatest inland towns in the United States, being only about fifty years old. Com- menced in the woods, where it seemed impossible to make even a road, but with untir- ing efforts and higher motives than personal advantage, these early pioneers worked by day, fought the Indians by night to protect their homes, until their little village was out of danger. Yet the town was hidden and out of reach. We who see it the greatest railroad center on the earth, accessible from more directions and to greater numbers than any other city that ever existed, find it hard to understand the motives that could have impelled the settlers of this period to try to get to it. Success crowned their efforts, and the little village, commenced on the dismal, ever-hated Pogue's Run, where the first murder was committed by the Indians upon the scattered pioneers, has grown steadily, year by year, until to-day it numbers nearly sixty thousand souls.
Her accessible mineral wealth and situation is equaled by no other city in the United States. The manufacturing interests are increasing constantly, and the time is not far distant when Indianapolis will be a center for the production of mechanical and scien- tific arts.
In 1847 the population numbered six thousand, and in 1872, sixty thousand, show- ing annually an increase of over two thousand. At this rate, the city of Indianapolis will soon outrank all her rival cities, and become the largest inland city in the world; and by reference to our "Classified Business Directory," the reader will see that every branch of business is represented, and that very extensively too.
EDUCATIONAL.
The schools of Indianapolis have, from the early days of the city, been in good stand- ing and repute. During the first years of the city's existence, private schools were taught in one or two localities, and not until 1845 were there any demonstrations look- ing toward the introduction of seminaries or public schools. Attempts were made for many years to introduce the free school system before the good citizens could maintain and carry out their principles. Finally they succeeded, and the School Board reported for the year ending June, 1871, 6,449 pupils, $60,480 annual cost for tuition, and 103 teachers to conduct the schools now established in the beautiful and flourishing city of Indianapolis.
