Harmonic Telephone Service in your residence, saves $6.00 a year- ask us.
Use the telephone for your out-of-town business-it increases sales and profits.
An Extension Telephone beside your bed (for $9.00 per year, 21/2 cents per day) will place you in direct communication with your physician, fire department, or police headquarters, in case of illness, fire or burglary. Can you afford to be without one?
There were only 6,000 telephones in Indiana after seventeen years of monopoly. Ten years of opportunity have developed an Independent strength of 200,000.
The value of the telephone depends upon the number of people you can reach. We now have over 6,500 telephones in service in Fort Wayne. Consider this when you think of contracting for a telephone for either your residence, office or place of business.

RULES FOR SUBSCRIBERS.
Take the receiver off the hook to call Central and replace it imme- diately when through talking. Your line tests busy until this is done.
If you wish to signal Central after the operator has answered, move the hook up and down once or twice.
Give the number desired distinctly; the operator will repeat it to avoid mistakes.
Answer promptly when called, the subcriber at the other end is waiting. For information, call the information desk.
Always ASK BY NUMBER; to ask by name causes delay to others as well as yourself.
Do not allow non-subscribers to visit over your line; while non-sub- scribers are using your line others may want you on important business.
Call the Chief Operator on any matter pertaining to the service.
Call the Chief Operator for the numbers of new subscribers.
Operators are not allowed to converse with subscribers.
It is impossible for operators to give attention to complaints of trouble; therefore subscribers are requested to report any irregularities in their service promptly to the Chief Operator or Manager.
Subscribers should understand and appreciate the fact that it is no more work, and much more agreeable, for an operator to ring the number called for than to say, "Line is busy," or, "They don't answer," unless such is the fact, and subscribers who insist on arguing the matter with operators merely retard the service.
Subscribers using Harmonic or Party Line Service should not hold line longer than five minutes; other subscribers on your line may want to use it, and they are entitled to the same priviledges.
In speaking into the transmitter, do so in a clear, distinct, well modu- lated tone of voice (not loud), being very careful to speak directly into the transmitter, with the lips as close to the rubber mouthpiece of trans- mitter as possible. Should connection with other telephone be desired immediately upon completion of conversation with a connection already ordered, move the hook ( upon which the receiver rests when the telephone is not in use) slowly up and down once or twice. From this the oper- ator will understand that you desire another connection, and will call "num- bor."

GENERAL INFORMATION.
Rentals are payable quartrly in advance, January 1, April 1, July 1, October 1.
All toll bills are due the first of each month for the preceeding month's business.
Send written notice promptly of any change in address.
A charge equal to the cost of repairs will be made whenever breakage is due to cause other than natural wear and tear.
A move charge of $2.00 will be made for moving a telephone from one part of the city to another. The material and labor necessary to make a move involves from $15.00 to $75.00, according to the location; the charge of $2.00 covers only in part the expense of the inside wiring of the prem- ises and the changes on the switchboard and apparatus; the fact of a sub- scriber moving causing a complete loss to the Company of the wiring ex- pense of the premises vacated.
For changing the location of the telephone from one part of the build- ing to another, a charge of $1.00 to cover labor and material will be made.
1
Ten days' notice for changing location of telephones should be given. Subscribers are requested to report fully by letter any change in firm name or business, for correction in the following issue of Directory.
This company assumes no liability for damages arising from names left out of this Directory or from errors occuring in its compilation or printing. This company reserves the right, when necessary, to change the num- ber of any subscriber.
In case of large fires at night between the hours 10 p. m and 7 a. m., subscribers must not expect the usual prompt service .. . Thousands of calls are often on such occasions flashed into the office at one time and it is im- possible always to answer promptly.
Subscribers of this company may obtain the daily forecasts and special warnings of the Weather Bureau of the United States Department of Ag- riculture from their respective exchanges after 11 a. m., Eastern Time.

DON'TS FOR THE SUBSCRIBER.
When your bell rings-and rings again-and perhaps again, and you DON'T answer, we can only report the result to the calling party. Perhaps you have been in some distant part of the residence or engaged at something or failed to hear any but the last tinkle of the telephone bell and arrived just a few seconds too late to answer and on taking down your receiver you get a different operator from the one who called you and your operator inquires, "Number Please?" You answer, "Why, you just rang my bell." She can only say, "Excuse it, Please, there is no one on your line." You blame the Company.
Perhaps a little later the calling party calls you again and you an- swer that you were there all the time .. . Again the Company gets the blame.
An outsider, a clerk, or a servant is using your telephone, perhaps holding the line for quite a while, and possibly leaving the receiver off the hook, thus keeping the line busy. During this period a call is made for you and you may be in some distant part of the residence or place of business and possibly were not aware that your telephone was in service by another. Within ten or fifteen minutes after the calling party resumes his effort to get you, tells you of his experience and you reply

"I have been here all the time and the line has not been in use.". . Again the Telephone Company gets the blame.
Neither must subscribers who are using Harmonic Lines with others forget or overlook the fact that the line can be busy without their having used it.
Use the Directory-DON'T try to remember telephone numbers .. . It saves time to you and others to do this.
Destroy all previous issues of the Directory.
By the way, why should the operator shoulder all the blame, when you, through an error, have called the wrong number. Why not acknowledge it to the party who has been called.
When calling anyone open the conversation by stating who are you. In answering your telephone always give your name first. and do not answer by the stereotyped 'Hello,' 'Yes' or 'What is it?' A telephone should al- ways be answered with your name or the name of your firm. For example, if J. S. Smith is called he should answer 'J. S. Smith.'. . This will avoid the usual, 'Is this number 200?' or 'Is this J. S. Smith?'
The Telephone Company is not desirous of escaping its full responsi- bility but it is desirous of having the intelligent and sincere co-operation of its subscribers.

RULES FOR LONG DISTANCE SERVICE.
7
All rates for Toll Service are based on a three-minute limit .. . Over- time will be charged for each additional minute.
Long distance Service will be charged to the subscriber from whose telephone the talking is done.
The Company does not undertake to transmit oral or written messages, and if done, it must be understood that the employe is acting as the Agent of the Toll Patron and not of the Company.
Subscribers connected with outside exchanges can not be asked to act as messengers, hence all long distance calls for parties having no tele- phone are subject to messenger charges.
If charges are to be collected at the other end of the line always tell the toll operator BEFORE the talking is done .. . Charges can not be re- · served if this rule is not observed.
Messages will be reversed-sent collect-provided the subscriber at the distant station accepts the charges, and if the request for reversal of charges is made before the conversation is held. Charges for messenger service, however, can not be reversd, but must be paid by the party calling.
Subscribers leaving calls with the toll operator and being obliged to absent themselves before the party called is secured, should notify toll operators where they may be reached.
When a party calls for a telephone number, a business house or resi- dence, and the connection is established, the regular rate will be charged even if the particular party wanted is not present at the other end of the line. To avoid this, give the name of the party wanted when the call is made.
When the toll lines are desired ask Central for Long Distance. When the operator responds, please give your name and telephone number, the name of the party you wish to talk to, and where he can be found.
Subscribers should keep a memorandum of each message sent over toll lines. Bills for such service will be rendered monthly. When payment is refused, the subscriber's line will be barred against further use of the toll lines until the payment is made at the office.
