The Egypta Scenery.

The oriental nature of the story of the opera gives scope for the most. elaborate and sumptuous scenic effects and the most brilliant and artistic variety of tints in the costuming.

The scenery, which was painted especially for this production from sketches submitted by the author of "Egypta," represents many scenes of great historical interest, while every beholder is delighted with the beauty and richness of the spectacular display.

First is shown a marvelous view of the blue Nile, with its time-honored pyramids and sphinx and luxurious palms and bulrushes, where the heart- broken Israelitish mother hides her babe, and Pharaoh's lovely daughter and her pretty maidens find him.

The second scene represents a beautiful oriental garden in the palace grounds of the princess. Here comes the wonderful chorus of young girls in their robes of white, and here are rendered the two bewildering drills. The first is a castanet movement by sixteen fairy-like little maidens, who, clad all in crimson and gold and sparkling with gems and crystals, flit through the graceful figures like so many butterflies at play. The second is a fine fancy drill for sixteen manl. little lads in oriental uniform.

The first scene of Act III discloses a magnificent view of a harvest field, with its wealth of golden grain bowing in the breeze of summer, and laden camels and oxen bearing away their burdens. Here for the first time appears the superb chorus of adult singers in the guise of Hebrew slaves biling under the lash of the cruel Egyptian overseer.

The second scene of this act is, possibly, the most artistic of any in the opera. The scenery shows a sunlit hillside in the land of Midian. Lambs and sheep are sheltered in the peaceful valley, and groups of dainty shep- herdesses and merry shepherds carol their joyous songs. Here the entranc- ing "Vision of Angels" is witnessed by Moses.

The third scene is the most elaborate and gorgeous spectacular triumph ever placed on any stage. The glorious city of Thebes, with its lofty mina- rets and towers and great gates and walls is disclosed. The splendid climax of song and drama is reached when, with a mighty blaring of trum- pets, the gates fly open and forth pour the gaily clad populace to greet with shouts of loud acclaim their victorious ruler, Pharaoh, who enters with his hosts of soldiers and armor bearers. The flashing of jewels, the brilliant play of colors, the gleaming of armor and gorgeous pomp of royalty make a scene never to be forgotten1.

In solemn contrast is next shown the gloomy, rock-hewn catacombs with their sculptured hieroglyphics and images, where Pharaoh mourns the death of his beloved first-born son. The dirges of the black-robed priests are peculiarly awe inspiring.

The opera closes with the glad rejoicing of the Hebrews at their escape from bondage.

KLAW & ERLANGER'S New and Greatest Production of GEN. LEW WALLACE'S

Ben - Hur

When "Ben-Hur" returns to the Ma- jestic the most elaborate, magnificent and historically correct production will be dis- closed that has ever charmed and en- thrilled a theater audience.

More than 300 people are employed in the production, while a special orchestra is carried to render the impressive music of Edgar Stillman Kelley, which has added so much solemnity and dignity to General Wallace's mighty drama.

Special attention is called to the ris- ing of the curtain on the evening per- formances at & o'clock precisely, and at 2 o'clock on the matinee. The perform- ance begins with the beautiful prelude, "The Star of Bethlehem." During its en- actment no one is seated.

During the "Ben-Hur" season all trac- tion lines entering Fort Wayne, as well as the various railroads, will make a tea- ture of arranging special service for the- ater parties on application, and all cars will be held until after performance.
