VALPARAISO.

It can not be else than a matter of pleasure to the citizens of Val- paraiso to see, as evidenced by this book, the growth of their city. While other cities have grown more rapidly none of a like kind have grown more steadily or upon a more reliable basis. There is noth- ing of a mushroom growth about Valparaiso. The building of the water-works system, the construction of a new ral'road in late years, and the general growth of the residence and business parts of the city should be and is reason for pride ar V seh er vulation by every resident. The unbounded success of the Namal school, the revival of manufacturing interests, and the advance in the extent and scope of trade are unquestioned evidences of a prosperous future. As a city of business enterprise and educational facilties V'a'paraiso has no superior outside the few large cities of the state. Therefore this work is not presented with an apology , it is presented with a justi- fiable pride.

VALPARAISO CITY DIRECTORY.

+ The publishers of the VALPARAISO CITY DIRECTORY take pride in presenting this volume to its patrons and the citizens generally. Starting out with no similar work of the city as a basis, every step of the work has been more or less arduous and fraught with more or less uncertainty. Its success is due greatly to the prompt and liber- al responses of the business men of the city Upon the usual esti- mate for basing such statistics there are ahait 6,000 actual inhabi- tants in the city limits. Coupling this with the 2,000 students, and more, who regularly attend the Normal School, Valparaiso has a pop- ulation of 8,000 people which ranks it as one of the leading cities of the state. There can be no doubt of the usefulness of this work. As a book of ready and constant reference its usefulness will be proven every day.
