PREFACE.
In presenting to the citizens of Valparaiso and Porter County business men our second volume of Valparaiso City and a list of residences, business men and miscellaneous societies in the following towns in the county classified by themselves, Tasoning, Kouts, Boone Grove, Hebron, Hurlbut. Burdick, Furnessville, Porter, Babcock, Woodville, Crocker, Crissman, McCool, Thelma, Flint Lake and Wheeler, we congratulate them on the apparent prosperty of the City of Valparaiso, it will be found from observation that the Directory of Valparaiso City contains 2,971 names, mul- tiplied by 2%, which is a very small ratio gives your city a population of 7,428. These figures do not include the students at the normal college. Adding then, the average attendance of that institution of 2000, we have a total population 9428. We have used great care and diligence in procuring inform- ation and we think the public will find this our second volume, as correct and reliable as it is possible to get up a work of this kind. We tender our thanks to the business and professional men of the city and county for their liberal patronage and will make it our endeavor in two years and half to publish our third issue. Also we most heartily ap- preciate the courtesy and support that has been shown the Directory by the daily and weekly papers in the county, which have been of great assistance to us. In closing this brief introduction of the second issue of our Directory, we warn you to beware of directory borrowers and thieves.
Very respectfully, BUMSTEAD & CO.
