ARCADE.
HE ARCADE was established and opened by C. W. PADGETT, in June, 1887. Mr. Padgett recognized that Society is divided into classes, and that this is as true regarding patrons of Saloons as in any oth- er particular. Ever since the organization of Society there has been a social custom of breaking bread and drinking wine together as a token of friendship and good will, and many people merely drink for the sake of manifesting this spirit of sociability with their friends. Others drink because they like the stimulating effects of a drink of pure liquor; others because they enjoy the refreshing effects of a draught of Beer or Ale.
These classes are composed of gentlemen of intelligence, refinement and good taste who abhor vulgarity, profanity and rowdyism. There is another class who drink because they find depraved pleasure in getting drunk, blackguarding, blaspheming and indulging in rowdyism. The last named class is not at all congenial to the others and where you find it you will not find the others. MR. PADGETT determined, at the com- mencement, to conduct
The Arcade .....
in such a manner as to command the respect of the better classes and to that end no drunkenness, profanity, Obscenity nor disorderly conduct was permitted in the house and every patron was requested to conform to these rules. If he did not manifest a disposition to do so he was at once notified that neither his patronage nor presence was desired.
There was another essential thing to be considered in catering to this class of trade: The goods offered must be of such a high class as to commend themsives to them, in view of which the oldest and best brands of Kentucky Whiskies and old Maryland Rye were procured; he sent direct to the vineyards of California for his native wines; he procured the Old London Dock Gin, famous in all countries for its excellency. With these and the best brands of imported Brandies, Cordials, etc., the reputation of the ARCADE was made and keept. Much credit for the good charac- ter and popularity of the place is due to the efficiency and courtesy of MR. PERRY BOTTS, who has been intimately connected with its man- agement.
