He is one who never sought public dis- tinction; is naturally modest and retiring, and the official positions in which he has acted, at various times, have been tendered him by his fellow citizens, in recognition of his many virtues, and rare ability; and his official record is one of which he may justly be proud. Scrupulously honest aud upright in all his dealings, he enjoys the friendship and good will of all with whom he has ever been associated.

L
RES. OF A. B. MYERS. SEC. 6, CLINTON TP. CASS . CO. IND.
JOHN MYERS. FATHER
JOHN MYERS,
CLINTON TP.
MR. MYERS was born in Franklin County, Virginia, September 3rd, 1808. In 1814, when six years of age, he emigrated with his parents to Ohio, and located in Montgomery County. Until nineteen years of age he was employed on his father's farm. At that age he began work as a blacksmith, and for a period of five years was thus engaged. In the fall of 1830, he was married, in Preble County, Ohio, to Miss Ann Swisher, who bore him four children, viz .: Isaac N., Henry C., Mary A., and Alfred B.
Three years after his marriage, Mr. Myers removed to Cass County, at a time when but little effort had been made to improve the land. He purchased a tract of 240 acres, heavily timbered land, for a home- stead. He was then a young man of iron will, and corresponding strength, and throughout the lonely, dreary days of pioneer life, he toiled with resistless energy to clear up his forest-farm, and found a home for his young family. His efforts were ultimately crowned with success, and the dense forrest disappeared under the steady blows of his ax. On this tract he erected a log-house which was his home for a number of years. This subsequently gave place to the hand- some residence which now adorns the farm, where nearly forty-five years ago Mr. Myers began life as a pioneer.
In 1865 he transferred this property to bis son Alfred B., reserving a portion upon which he erected a residence for himself and wife. There he resided until the death of his wife, on the 26th day of February, 1877. He is now living with his son, at the advanced age of sixty-nine years, and at this advanced period of his life, exhibits but little evidence of the ravages of time. He is a vigorous, bealthy inan, a kind neighbor, and a generous friend; and is universally respected by his acquaintances.
MRSANNA MYERS. DECEASED.

JONATHAN NEFF,
CLINTON TP.
Among ibose who left eastern homes, at an carly day in the history of this county, and with daunt- less courage, undertook the task of clearing away timber, and locating homes, was the gentleman whose name appears above, He is the second son of Jacob and Polly Neff, and was born in Franklin County, Virginia, on the joth day of June, 1797. His father was a farmer, and Jonathan was taught to follow that honorable and useful occupation.
At the age of twelve years, he moved with his parents to Montgomery County, Ohio, There he attended the district school, and received his early education-which was, necessarily, quite liouted, owing to the fact that school was open for a short term in the Winter, only. The remainder of his time,-during the Spring and Summer,-was occupied in receiving practical instruction in the science which has been his field of action in life, and in which he has been eminently successful-vis: the science of agriculture.
He remained at home, assisting his father, until twenty eight years of age, when he married Miss Sallie Kinnaman, and soon after, removed to Preble County, U , where he purchased a farm of 160 acres, upon which he began life on his own account, He remained there for a period of four years: but, his father's family having previously removed to Cass County, Ind., he, too, felt a desire to push west, and associate his fortunes with this State. He accordingly disposed of his farm in Ohio, and, with his wife and three children, together with his household goods, made an overland journey to this county, arriving in the year 1830, The arduous duties, so well known, and so inseparahly connected with the settlement of a new country, then began in earnest. Faint hearts, and idle hands, were not the material required in that settlement; and, as a consequence, those who engaged in this labor, were men eminently qualified for the task. In a short time, the forest disappeared, and the spot where once, the red man and the wild deer, roamed in undisputed possession, began to be dotted with the little cabins of the pioneers,-indicating the advance of civilization, and the location of a thrifty settle- menL
At the time of Mr. Neff's arrival, the only habitations of white men, on the east side of the Wabash, below the present site of Logansport, were the residences of Gen'l John Tipton, Andrew Young, Jacob, Daniel, and William Neff, (brothers), Christian Simon, and Eli Shideler Mr. Neff cast his lot with these gentlemen,-who had preceeded him, and has, ever since, been prominently connected with the interests of his township. He has always felt a lively interest in public improvements, and no educational or benevolent enterprise, has ever appealed to him in vain.
His married life has been blessed hy eight children, as follows: Jacoh,-norn July ist 1826; Washington R.,-born December 1st, 1637; Daniel K.,-and Polly,-born May 15th, 1829: William,- born July 12th, 1832; Sarah,-born July 15th, 1834: Jonathan,-burn March with, 1836; and Lucinda, -born October 24th, 1639. Of this number, only Washington, Daniel, and Sarah, survive, to comfort the declining years of their parents.
Mr. Neff, although eighty-one ycots of age, still enjoys robust health; and we join with his friends, in wishing him many added years of usefulness among them. He, and his estimable wife, are active and consistent members of the German Baptist Church, and for many years, have exerted a potent influence in the cause of the Master.
Mr. Neff is one of the substantial farmers of this county, and is highly honored and respected by all.
