LOCATION OF FARMS.

Blackford county contains four townships, the aggregate number of sec- tions, or square miles of land within its boundary lines, being 169. Washing- ton township contains 36 sections, Harrison 42, Licking 42 and Jackson 49. It was first the intention of the compilers of the Blackford county gazetteer to lo- cate the farms by placing opposite their several descriptions their location in miles distant from Hartford City and Montpelier; but as it would have been necessary to locate the Harrison township farms and part of those in Wash- ington with reference to their distance and direction from Montpelier and the remainder from Hartford City, it can be seen that some confusion would have resulted. It was therefore decided, after mature deliberation, that the better plan would be to place opposite each name the number of the section in which the farm is located. As an example, the following description, found in the "A's," will serve to explain the plan of locating the farms: "William H. At- kinson, 120 acres, H. tp., Richmond, Ind, sec w *31."

The foregoing indicates that Mr. Atkinson's 120-acre farm is located in west *section 31, Harrison township, and that his postoffice address is Richmond. By referring to the accompanying table it is also ascertained that the section containing Mr. Atkinson's farm is two miles north and two miles east of Hart- ford City and four miles south and two west of Montpelier. In this manner the exact location of every farm in the county is given. Each section is lo- cated with reference to its distance and direction from both Hartford City and Montpelier. The crossing of Water and Walnut streets is the central point in Hartford City and the crossing of Main and Monroe streets in Montpelier. The description refers to the corner of the section nearest to the two central points:
