ORDNANCE DEPARTMENT.
The Ordnance Department consists of sixty officers and 1,500 enlisted men. The officers are stationed at the different Arsenals, and the enlisted men assigned to duty in detachments proportionate to the size of the Arsen- al, and the amount of work there is to be done. At the Indianapolis Arsenal there is one commanding officer, and twenty-five enlisted men, and one Mil- itary Store Keeper. The grounds con- sist of about seventy-five acres, and are situated one and a half miles east of the city. There is already complet-
ed a Main Store House, one set of Off- cers' Quarters, one Magazine for stor- ing Powder, and one Office. A build- ing for storing Artillery is in process of erection, and will be completed next season. It is expected that other buildings for manufacturing and stor- ing Ammunition and for other pur- poses will be put up from year to year, as fast as it is possible to do so. There are constantly employed upon the grounds about 250 men-mechanics and laborers. All the material is worked, and the bricks used in the buildings manufactured upon the groundis.
