The village of Antwerp is situated in Carryall township, Paulding county, Ohio, between the Maumee river and the Wabash and Erie canal, being distant from Toledo 71 miles and from Fort Wayne, Indiana, 22 miles via T. W. & W. railway, and 41/2 miles from Indiana State line. It was first settled in 1841 by Isaac Woodux. The population in 1855 was 200 which has increased to the present time to 1, 300.


The resources of this town are principally grain and timber (hard wood), the village being in the midst of as valuable timber belt as can be found in the State.

north of Fort Wayne. The Detroit. Eel River and Illinois rail- way also has a station here. The village is in a thriving condi- tion, and the merchants generally do a good business. The pub- lic school buildings, as well as those belonging to the county, are substantial and elegant structures. The Republican is a live paper with various correspondents in DeKalb and adjoining counties. The Courier is democratic in politics, and has a good circulation. Population about 2,500.

This village, the county seat of Wells county, is on the south bank of the Wabash river, twenty-four miles south of Fort Wayne via the Fort Wayne, Muncie & Cincinnati railroad. On the business streets, which are substantially paved, are a number of brick blocks which compare favorably with any in Northern Indiana. The streets, on account of being well lighted, have in the evening quite a city appearance. Two weekly papers are published, one Democratic, the other Repub- lican. A number of extensive manufacturing establishments are located here. The Oliver House is a new and well-kept hotel. Population 2,500.

A thriving incorporated village, the county seat of Whitley county, situated 19 miles west of Fort Wayne, and 129 miles east of Chicago, on the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago rail- road, at the crossing of the Detroit, Eel River & Indiana rail- road. Its superior railroad facilities make it a point from which large quantities of grain, flour and stock are shipped annually. The merchants are wide awake for trade and for the most part do a good business. Among the leading industries of the village prominent mention is made of the new " Brilliant " merchant flouring mills, owned by D F Campbell & Co.


The hotels compare favorably with any in this portion of the State ; and if the traveler stops at the Columbia City House, he will soon learn that its manager " knows how to keep a hotel."


Two weekly papers are published, one Republican, the other Democratic. A new $30,000 jail furnishes safe accommodation to its occupants. Population, about 3,000.
