THE SOLDIERS' HOME.

In June Capt. Ekin contracted for the Hall now used as the sleeping apartment, and other necessary structures, and all were completed and ready for the recep- tion of soldiers on the 25th of July fol- lowing. Subsequently it was found nec- essary to have much more room, a dining hall and other buildings, and the author- ity was obtained from Washington to go on with the good work. A dining hall was accordingly erected-250 feet long, 24 feet wide and one story high, run- ning parallel with the hall erected be- fore. Also, other buildings and wings to the main one, for commissary and other departments.

The Home is situated in a beautiful grove-a beautiful site selected by Gov. Morton and Capt. Ekin. It is within two hundred yards of White River, two squares south of Washington Street, and a few rods north of the Terre Haute Rail Road. Properly it is divided into two departments, the Soldiers' Home and City Barracks-the latter being the quarters of the 2d battalion of the 63d Regiment, doing duty as Provost Guard. The chief officer, Capt. Frank Wilcox, is command- ant and Provost Marshal of the city; Capt. H. Tindall being in command of the

Jencks' Patent Hemmer used only by the Florence.
