REMINISCENCES.
INTRODUCTORY.
A number of reminiscences have been prepared by members of Company D, which are here presented for the purpose of preserving to their families the individual duties and experiences required in a more varied ser- vice than fell to the lot of most soldiers. The company took part in the active field campaign resisting the advance of the rebel army under Gen. Braxton Bragg on Louisville, in September, 1862, and in the advance from Murfreesboro of our own army under Gen. Rose- crans, in June, 1863, ending with the most terrible battle of the war, at Chicamauga, Ga., Sept. 19 and 20, our company losing more than half the number killed or wounded that were in the battle; then the siege of Chattanooga and its raising by the capture of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge; the march to Knox- ville immediately after, and the winter campaign with- out camp equipage and living principally off the coun- try; after this, garrison duty at Chattanooga, protecting that most important place while Sherman moved for- ward to Atlanta and the sea -with his army, rush-

ing at an hour's notice to any point where an attack was made on our lines of communication; after this, in front at Decatur resisting the advance of the Rebel army under Gen. Hood in its last great effort to get North; and finally opening the great battle at Nashville by attacking on the right of the enemy, and following up in the pursuit until it was abandoned, and the war ended by the disbanding of their army.
BY J. H. MAUZY.
My first duty in camp was as officer of the day, on Aug. 14, 1862, and it was the first day that anything was done .in Camp Logan in the way of sentinel and . guard duty. The non-commissioned officers were ap- pointed on this day. The most of them, and many of the commissioned officers, did not know the meaning of the commands or calls or even how to "fall into ranks," and the men who had any experience en- joyed making the confusion more confounded. Officers were called by their nick-names, and the men did not. like to be stopped from going past their "chums" who were on guard duty with sticks for guns. My military experience was limited to the Zouave drill with the McReynold Guards at Rushville, and I knew nothing of actual camp life, so that I had a lively 24 hours' duty there in trying to get others to do what I knew noth- ing of. would cry out "Corporal of the guard, beat No. 5." The Corporal would go to see what was wanted, when the guard would say that he wanted to get a drink of water ; the Corporal would take his place and .the guard would go off. Soon another guard would call out "Corporal of the guard, beat No. 9," and the Sergeant would go and find that the guard wanted to get some tobacco. He would take his place, and then "Corporal of the guard, beat No. 7," would be called out. The Sergeant and Corporal both being away, I went to Colonel Shaw and told him that I had run out of non-commissioned officers with whom to relieve sen- tinels who were calling. He gave me a "a pointer," and we soon stopped that game. The fact that it was the first time most of the men were ever restricted to certain bounds of a few acres, seemed to make them want to go outside the more, and it was a kind of adventure to get out. The difference in rank was a hard thing for all to learn, both in respect to the duties required and to the title. Tom, Dick or Harry were used when the soldiers should have said, Corporal, Sergeant, or higher rank. It was a regular picnic at Camp Logan. Day and night there was music, sing- ing, dancing and story telling, when not on duty, and we were called to go before the novelty wore off.
In less than ten days from the time of leaving our homes we were trying the realities of war in Kentucky, and within thirty days from our muster into the United States service, we had campaigned over one hundred miles in that State and were prisoners at Munford-

ville, where we were surrendered with the "honors of war."
My first serious experience in the war was at Lebanon, Ky., September 6, IS62, where I had charge of a picket station over a mile south of that place. I had allowed one relief to go foraging, another was on duty at the outposts, and the third was with me at the station, about a quarter of a mile from the outposts. After noon an orderly dashed up and handed me a large envelope, which I opened and read : "Bring in your pickets immediately. E. DUMONT, Brigadier Gen- eral." I still have the order. I was in a quandary, not knowing whether I was about to be attacked by a largely superior force, or what was going to happen. I sent men running to call cut and try and get my foragers in. We waited, all of us nervously, a half-hour, but none came. We fell back a short distance, and waited again, and so for two hours, perhaps, when they came. But our astonishment was increased when we got back into the town and did not see a single soldier. The streets were deserted and the houses shut up. Finally some one called to us that our troops were down the railroad, getting on the cars, and that the rebels were coming in from the other side of town. We chose our direction quickly, and caught up with our troops in time to get on the cars for Lebanon Junction. There pressing duties came so fast that my detail was never looked after. A few days later we were at Munfordville and out of the way of a court-martial which I feared. It taught me a lesson-to keep my

command always ready for orders, although the temp- tation to relax rules was very great whenever there was a good prospect for a change of fare.
The day after our regiment changed camp into · Wood's Division, at Chattanooga, October 21, 1863. Captain J. H. Mauzy, with Lieutenant John Reese, of Company C., was detailed to take charge of a guard of about fifty men, to escort a train of some fifty or more wagons to Stevenson, Ala., for supplies. At this time we were suffering much on account of short rations and heavy duties to perform. So we marched gladly away, thinking that by foraging we might better our condition. The Fall rains had begun, and the starved mules fell by the wayside until the road was lined with them nearly the entire distance of eighty miles ; for we had to go the longest way to get there, the short route being controlled by the rebels. It was a sad sight to see our poor, faithful mules pull through the mud and over the mountains as long as they could stand up, and then fall in their tracks and die. We lived on parched corn until we got over Waldon's Ridge on the third day, and went into camp, twenty-seven miles out, having thirty mules dead and abandoned seven wagons. We sent out a forage train, which came back loaded, and we staid two days to feed up. Having no salt. our fresh meat, with persimmons, did not agree with us, and there were some very sick men for a few hours. The roads were so bad and the mules so weak. we could go only about twelve miles a day. October .29, we arrived at Bolivar, and went into camp to feed

up the mules we had left, (I think about half of them ) for the return trip. Here I bought three tin plates at thirty cents each, three tin cups at twenty-five cents each, and a small tin coffee pot for $1.00, and our mess put on some style after that. November S, we started back with our wagons loaded, and went the short route along the river, which had just been opened up ; but for two miles in the gorge along the river the sight was horrible. The rebels had burned a large train of wagons, a few days previous, and shot the mules, and the stench from the partly burned animals was fearful. We got back to Chattanooga, November 12. A few days afterward, my bunk-mate on this trip, Lieutenant Reese, was killed in the charge on Mission Ridge.
