Reunions of the 88th Indiana.
On October 10. 1882. a remion of the regiment was held at Au- burn, Indiana. . Col. George Humphrey, presided. There were pres- ent Col. Cyrus E. Briant. Gen. Lewis J. Blair: Capt. Allan H. Dougall Adjutant, and 132 survivors. There was also present Col. Doug- las Hapeman, of the 104th Illinois; Gen. Benjamin Harrison, of the 70th Indiana: Col. I. N. Walker, of the 73rd Indiana: Col. Charles .1. Zollinger, of the 129th Indiana: Gen. James R. Carnahan, formerly Capt. 86th Indiana: and many other visiting comrades.
So pleasant a time was had, that it was concluded that a reunion of the survivors of the regiment should be held each year: on or about October 8th: at such place as may be selected by vote of the regiment.
At the second reunion. which was held in Fort Wayne, Indiana, October 9. 1883. it was resolved that whenever the survivors of the regiment meet. in reunion or otherwise, that the ranking officer present shall preside. unless he shall detail some other person for that purpose. Further that the adjutant of the regiment shall act as secretary; in his absence, some one shall be detailed acting adju- tant; and that the ranking officer of each company present shall take charge of such company, during the reunion and shall preside at all meetings of the company.
It was afterwards resolved that each survivor of the regiment shall contribute fifty cents annually to defray the expenses of these reunions.
On August 7. 1886, the regiment assembled at Fort Wayne, Indi- ana. to attend the funeral of Col. George Humphrey, who died athis home in that city, August 4, 186. Col. Cyrus E. Briant was ab- sent in California, and Gen. Lewis J. Blair appointed Adjutant Hart- man B. DuBarry to command, with Capt. Allan H. Dougall. Adjutant. Gen. Blair and Dr. Teal acted as pall bearers. Eighty survivors. of the regiment were present.
The regiment was escorted to Lindenwood Cemetery by the State Militia and G. A. R. Posts of the city. The funeral was a large one

and was a fitting testimonial of respect to the first colonel of the regiment.
At the reunion held at Fort Wayne, October 10. 1804, the regi- ment was invited to unveil a monument which was erected at the eastern entrance to the North City Park, to the soldiers of Allen county who fell in defense of the Union. After dinner the regi- ment was formed with Col. Cyrus E. Briant commanding, Capt. Allan H. Dougall, Adjutant. and Capt. Fred F. Boltz, officer of the day. They were accompanied by the city posts of the G. A. R., the Sons of Veterans and W. R.C., preceeded by the band of the Home for Feeble Minded Youth, and were escorted by the State Militia under command of Major J. E. Miller, Lient. J. E. Gaskins. Adju- tant. Carriages containing the honored guests were followed by a vast concourse of people.
The exercises were opened with prayer by the Rev. D. B. Keller. late Quartermaster Sergeant of the regiment. Mr. Anthony Kelker, of the Committee on City Parks, presented the monument to the city, which was accepted by the Mayor of the city, C. B. Oakley, for- merly Captain of Co. "E." in a few fitting remarks.
Hon. R. C. Bell, for the donors. then presented it to the soldiers, which was responded to by Col. C. E. Briant, who accepted it in be- half of the soldiers of Allen county. At the signal, one gun from the Zollinger Battery, Miss Winifred JJ. Dougall and Miss Ida Kick- ley, daughters of survivors of the regiment, drew aside the veil, amidst shouts and cheers and music by the bands. Capt. Christ. Hettler, of the 142nd Indiana, accepted the gift for the German Veterans of Allen county. Col. I. N. Walker, of the 73rd Indiana. a former resident of this county. then delivered an appropriate ad- dress. historical, patriotic and eulogistic.
A cut of the bronze ligure on the monument is to be found on another page. On the stone beneath is cut a G. 1. R. badge, the seals of the United States, the state of Indiana and the city of Fort Wayne; and on the faces of the stone are inscribed

"Gettysburg."
On September 19. 1895, a reunion of the regiment was called for on the battlefield of Chickamauga, at the site of the regimental mon- ument at 9:00 a. m. Accordingly at the time appointed Noah Knepper, of Co. "C", planted the colors on the monument. The reg-

The colonel called the reg- iment to order and addressed it briefly in fitting terms. and called upon the adjutant, who, in absence of Lient. Milton M. Thompson. of Co. "D", and Marcellus M. Justus. of Co. "F". state commission- ers of the Chickamauga Battlefield Park. stated, "that the survivors of the regiment had been called to dedicate the monument. The field had been purchased by the national government, and was about to be dedicated as a publie park. The base of the monument had been built by the commissioners of the general government. and the monument by the state of Indiana. The site selected had been ap- proved by the war department, as the position occupied by the regi- ment where it suffered the greatest loss during the battle." He stated. "that it remained for the survivors of the regiment here assembled, to ratify the acts of the commissioners and the site selected, and to accept and dedicate the monument."
Capt. J. R. Webster, of Co. "G", spoke at some length giving his recollections of that great battle and the part taken in it by the reg- iment. He concluded by saying that he thought the site selected. was about where Major Stough was wounded, and he approved the action of the commissioners.
Lieut. Josiah King. of Co. "F", and Lieut. Royal A. Edgerly, of Co. "1", also approved the site. as did others of those present.
After which Daniel D. Diehl, of Co. "H", delivered the following address :
MY COMRADES-And little wonder I say my comrades, because there is no finer figure in history than the American Volunteer in the Union army of '61 and '64. In his simple suit of army blue he stands out against the background of a peaceful civilization. clear-cut as an athlete ready for the spring; behind him, home, business profession: behind him, love, hope and ambition: in front of him only the flag. The Volunteer rushed away from home, the school or the workshop, the farm or the office and groping blindly for a while, emerged the finest, most dramatic, most soldierly figure on the stage of war.
Comrades, thirty-two years ago on this line, where this beautiful monument now stands, we faced an enemy of Americans, who wore the gray. "formen worthy of our steel," here we met as enemies, but now, we meet as friends. and brother Americans. We remember the great leaders, who have passed over the silent river into the unknown; firm and faithful Sherman, daring and prudent Sheridan, the silent, invincible, the unconquered, the greatest soldier of bis time, U. S. Grant. The gallant and betoved volunteer soldier John A. Logan, and that careful, firm, steadfast, noble, patriotic soldier, the Rock of Chickamauga, who saved the army of Rosecrans from utter destruction, General George H. Thomas, if we can do nothing more, Comrades, let us drop a tear.
My Comrades, many nations have had armies, but no nation since time began ever mustered into battle fine an army so grand, so brave, so pure, and who

Sacred. yes, thrice sacred. made so by the best blood of Americans. They gave the best they had. to the saving of the freest and the best government under the broad canopy of heaven.
To you. dear comrades, my heart goes out in deep sympathy: to you. - urvi- vors of the sith Indiana and of the death field-day -; to you, who bared your breasts to the storms of shot and shell: to you, who left dear ones at home. to die if need be. for the land you loved: to you. I pay this tribute of respect.
May you live many years in the land you helped to save. may your winters be as balmy a - the spring, as full of fragrant blossoms a- the summer: and when at last your camp fires burs low, when you enter the deepening shadows of death, when your brave hearts beat weak and slow. may the memory of your noble deeds, that kept your country on the map of the world, and the flag of the Nation in the air, tili your soul- with peace and joy.
As you look on this monument let it console you to know that you are not forgotten, and that in the centuries yet to come. the stories of your valor and heroic deeds will be told in art and song and story and upon your honored graves, flowers the most fragrant will be lovingly laid by millions of men, women and children yet unlin.
Comrades henceforth let u- dwell together in unity, fraternity, charity and loyalty forever. And around this monument let us pledge ourselves anew to stand by each other.
The exercises were just completed. when it was discovered that in our ranks there was an unannounced. yet welcome guest, who. on . stepping to the front was recognized as our old brigade commander

General John Beatty says of it : Courants, O., Dec. 9, 1895.
MY DEAR CAPTAIN : - I want to thank you most heartity for the History of the Ssth'Indiana. It is the briefest and most complete regimental history I have seen, and will be preserved by the descendants of the soldiers of the regiment the next five hundred years. In brief, it will grow in interest and in age, just as all such books do.
Yours respecthdly.
JOHN BEATTY.
