The original plat was laid out January 31, 1844, by William Pearson.
The village of Wawaka is located on section 28, in this township. It was laid out February 4. 1857. It owes its location and growth to the L. S. & M. S. Railway, and is quite a business point.
It contains two churches, Methodist and Freewill Baptist ; a steam flour- ing and custom mill ; a steam saw mill (views of which are given in this Atlas) ; three or four stores ; several wagon and blacksmith shops ; two shoe shops, etc., and a population of about 400.
The Railway Company have erected a very neat station house, and put up a large grain warehouse for the accommodation of the farming community.
The land on which Wawaka stands was originally owned hy Isaac Tibhot. The town boasts a good school building, and has all the appliances of busi- ness and civilization of similar towns elsewhere.
ALLEN.
This is one of the best townships in Noble County, having a smaller area of wet land than any of the others. The only lake which touches it is Bixler Lake, near Kendallville, part of said city being in this township. The Grand Rapids and Indiana Railway traverses the township from north to south, and the new line of the Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Chicago Railway crosses the south part, connecting with the Grand Rapids road at Avilla, The township contains the villages of Avilla, St. Mary's, and Lisbon, together with Iddings' Addition to the city of Kendallville.
The first settlers in Allen Township were George Ulmer, and Justice
C. Alvord, who located in 1834 in what is now Iddings' Addition to Kendall- ville. Henry Iddings and four sons settled on section 4 in 1836. A. D. Whitford entered land in section 2, February 14, 1837, and located the same year. Samuel Weimer settled in the spring of 1836. Edwin Randall, at that time looking for land, helped Mr. Weimer raise a log cabin. Mr. Randall soon after entered six eighty-acre tracts in sections 28 and 29, being the third man who entered land in the township. He did not settle, how- ever, until 1841, and even then there were no roads and nothing to mark a path except " blazed " trees and an old Indian trail from Fort Wayne to Lima, in LaGrange County. Mr. Randall held the office of associate judge from 1842 to 1855, at which time the office was abolished.
Truman Wheeler came to the county in 1841 and entered land in section 31, which he deeded to his son, Heman H. Wheeler, who settled on the place in 1844. Forty acres of the place had been chopped, not cleared, and a log house built, with a board floor, which was a novelty in those days, and Mr. Wheeler's was the only one of the kind in the neighborhood. There was then but one cabin between them and Lisbon, a distance of five miles. Fort Wayne was the nearest market, and the trip there and back occupied three days.
John Fillmore, a cousin of Millard Fillmore, was quite an early settler, as were also R. P. Helman, Elihu Wadsworth, and Abner Rice.
Lisbon is one of the oldest towns in the county, but is too close to Ken- dallville to ever amount to much.
Avilla is a live little place, onc mile from the south line of the township, and contains a number of good business blocks, and some very good dwell- ings. Baum, Walters & Co., and Messrs. Wheeler & Spencer, have lately made extensive additions to the place, and the impetus which will. be given by the advent of the B., P. & C. Railway, must make the place one of the first in the county, at no distant date.
Dr. T. P. Bicknell settled at Lisbon, in 1847. He was one of the first regularly educated surgeons in the county, and was a member of the consti: tutional convention for the revision of the state constitution in 1850-51. Me was 26 years of age, and the youngest member of the body.
NOBLE.
This township has the honor of having the earliest settlement in the county, Joel Bristol locating 37% miles southeast of Wolf Lake April 4, 1827. An- drew Humphreys settled northwest of Wolf Lake, on section 8, in 1833- three years before the county was organized. McIntyre Seymour came to the county about 1836, but did not settle until 1840, when he located off section 21. Louis Hite came to Wolf Lake in 1839. Elias and Samuel Jones are very early settlers. Stedman Gray, now living at Wolf Lake, settled at Port Mitchell in 1835, and claims to have manufactured the first flour and meal made in the county. The arrivals of later date are : John Young, '1840 ; Thomas Gray and Francis R. Davis, 1844 ; George Kitt and three sons, 1846 . Wm. S. Quinn, same year, and Frederick Stults, 1848. Abraham Ott also settled in 1840.
Noble Township has more waste land than any other in the county, nearly one-half of it being covered by lakes and marshes. They are the head-waters of the Tippecanoe River, the lake of the same name being its principal feeder. The other lakes in the township of any note are : Bear, High, Loon, Muncie, Silver. Deep. Wolf, Crane, Crooked, Rivir and Long. The villages are Wolf Lake and Noblesville, situated on the old Fort Wayne and Goshen road, and and among the oldest villages in the county. The best portions of the town- ship are the northwestern and southeastern, where may be found some very fine farms. The first death was that of John Voorhees.
Dr. Elias Jones, living west of Wolf Lake, was one of the early settlers; and among the very first physicians in the county.
The doctor owns one of the finest farms in the township, as the view given in this Atlas will testify.
Doctor Jones has on his farm the oldest log house west of Wolf Lake, .built in 1832. It is shown in the view of his premises.
JEFFERSON.
This is perhaps the best farming township in the county, its soil being generally a sandy loam, and not as much waste as there is in any other, with the exception of, perhaps, Allen and Perry. It is generally well improved, and its inhabitants are intelligent, well-to-do farmers.
According to the best information, the first settlers in the township were : David Harriman, Benjamin Potts and James Skinner, who came in 1836. Jehu Foster arrived in 1837, and his was the sixth family in the township. James Thompson entered land in Orange Township sometime in 1836, and located in Jefferson in the Spring of 1837. John Call and Abraham Carey must have settled about the same time. F. A. Black came in 1845, and lo- cated on section 24. Calvin Prouty, 1848, and Daniel W. Hines, 1854, were among the later arrivals. S. C. Spencer and six sons located in 1837. E. B. Spencer moved to Allen Township in 1853.
.
The first election in the township was beld about 1838, at which time seven votes were cast, the following being the list : James Skinner, Jehu Foster, Samuel Spencer, John Call, James Thompson, John Bailey and Abraham Carey.
Two sections are appropriated from the west side of this township, and constitute a part of Albion Township. The new B. P. & C. Ry. crosses Jeff- erson and Albion townships.
SWAN.
This is the southeast corner township of the county and has quite an extensive area of marsh land in the western and southern portions. The Grand Rapids and Indiana, and Detroit, Eel River and Illinois Railroads now run through it, intersecting at Grand Rapids Crossing, a small station near the southeast comer of the township, and formerly called Simonsville. The other villages are Swan and a flag station called Bruces.
The first settler in the township was George Rickard, who located in

HISTORY OF NOBLE COUNTY -CONCLUDED.
February, 1834, on land now owned by Hamilton Badger. Conrad Cramer was the second settler, locating in June of same year on section 11, where he has since resided. Charles and James Shelner and David T'onsley settled in the fall, and Aaron Wood in Angust of same year. According to information given by Mr. Cramer, there were but four dwellings at the time he settled between Fort Wayne and the LaGrange County prairies, oue of them being a hotel kept on the present site of Kendallville by a Mrs. Dingman, and called the "Brick l'avern." John and Jonas Strouse came in 1836, also Adam Fulk and four sons, who settled on land in sections 31 and 32, Samuel Bronghton settled about 1838, Jacob Rhodes about 1849. John and William Whan are also carly settlers. Hiram King located in June, 1837.
GREEN.
In this township we find a variety of country lakes, some marsh, quite substantial hills, etc. It is very broken, and, with the exception of a strip
along the north side, is perhaps inferior as a farming township to those sur. rounding it, with the exception of Noble.
The first settler, so far as our information extends, was Samuel Gray, who located south of what is now Green Center Post- office. Jacob Eiman set- tled in Fall of 1836 on section 5. W. E. Bowen first settled ncar Albion about 1837 ; shortly after removed to l'ort Mitchell, and hually to present location, section 4, Green Township, in February, 1840. David Boner located in 1838, on section 21. G. A. Herandeen and L. N. Clemens came about 1845, and J. Watt about 1848.
The lakes in this township are quite numerons, a chain of them feeding the Elkhart River in the northern part of the township. They have but very little marsh around them, and are nearly all surrounded by quite high bluffs. Bowen and Long Lakes are very fine sheets of water, and all of them abound in fish. There is comparatively little marsh in this township, but the soil is generally clay, and the bluffs composed of such material will wash, thereby rendering the country inferior to a more level one for farming purposes.
WASHINGTON.
Land was entered in this township as early as 1835, but whether there were any actual settlements previous to the organization of the county in 1836 we cannot say. This was formerly a full congressional township of thirty-six sections, but the south twa tiers were set off to Whitley County in. 1844. leaving Washington twenty-four sections. The township lies among the lakes and streams forming the head-waters of the Tippecanoe River and, like many surrounding townships, contains a large amount of water and mārshi.
Among the earliest settlers were Joseph Galloway, Joseph E. Adair and Joseph McIntyre. A portion of the original " Flat Belly" Reservation extended into this township.
The early history of Washington would no doubt be equally interesting with that of other portions of the county, but we have been unable to procure anything of importance.
