The Railway Company has a just appreciation of the value of its patrons, and its magnificent earnings are the result of the good business tact which character- izes the management of its affairs.
The popularity of the line is attested by the fact that notwithstanding the strong- est kind of competition of old and new lines, the CHICAGO, MILWAUKEE & ST. PAUL RAILWAY continues to carry the greater portion of all the business between CHICAGO, MILWAUKEE, ST. PAUL and MINNEAPOLIS. INTRODUCTORY.
In making our thirty-fourth annual how to the good people of Indianapolis, through their city directory, we desire to congratulate them and ourselves on the pleasant rela- tions that have so long existed between us. It is now more than a third of a century since the city first reached the dignity of a directory, and for a large part of that period the present publishers have had the honor of furnishing it. How well they have suc- ceeded in representing the steady growth and progress of the city is for the public to judge, though we should regret to have it said or thought that we had fallen short of our duty in this regard in any particular. We have been constantly mindful of the fact that Indianapolis is one of the largest inland cities of the Union, a city not only of great pos- sibilities, but of great actualities. We have realized that in publishing its annual direc- tory we have been in a measure identified with the record of its growth and progress, and to some extent responsible for an accurate and truthful exhibit in this regard. We have tried to meet this responsibility with increasing effort from year to year. The period during which we have been publishing the city directory has been one of steady and almost uninterrupted growth. A comparison of our first directory with the present one would reveal a great many interesting facts, and much forgotten local history. Suffice it to say that during that period Indianapolis has had a great growth. The present di- rectory contains 46,150 names. This enumeration includes, besides the city proper, Haugh- ville, Brightwood, Irvington, West Indianapolis and North Indianapolis, all of which are properly suburbs of the city. At the rate of three persons to a name, which is a fair and moderate estimate, the above enumeration would give a population of 138,450. We estimate the suburban population at 14,000. Deducting this from the total would leave 124,450 as the population within the corporate limits of the city. We think this estimate very nearly correct.
The occasion seems appropriate to congratulate the citizens of Indianapolis on its steady growth, the healthy condition of its trade, and its bright prospects for the future. There is reason to believe that the causes which have contributed to the growth of the city in the past will continue to do so in a still greater degree. Its trade is in a remark- ably healthy condition, and steadily improving. Its manufacturing interests, already large, are rapidly increasing. The discovery and introduction of natural gas has given a healthy impetus to the growth of the city, which will certainly increase from year to year. The benefits of this cheap and cleanly fuel have just begun to be realized by the citizens, and are hardly known to outsiders.
