1890.

INTRODUCTORY.

The song of the Directory, like Tennyson's song of " The Brook," is

"For men may come and men may go, But I go on forever."

A great many men and women come to Indianapolis, and while the most re- main, some go away. Men may come and men may go, but the Directory lists them all. In a certain sense, it is a universal biography, for, while it does not tell where the citizens of Indianapolis were born, it tells exactly where they can be found in this year of our Lord, 1890, and if any of those recorded present last year have moved away, or gone to join the majority, the fact appears by the ab- sence of their names this year.

Probably few persons are aware of the great amount of careful, accurate and intelligent labor that goes to the making of a Directory for a city like Indian- apolis. Without going into details, we may say it occupies a large number of men several months, and that the labor requires great skill, care and fidelity. We aim at absolute accuracy, and are not satisfied with anything less.

The present Directory is the thirty-fifth in consecutive number, and the com- plete collection is interesting and valuable. This one contains 48,282 names against 46,150 in the last Directory. This includes all the suburbs of the city, which, already a part of it to all intents and purposes, will no doubt soon be legally annexed. At the rate of three persons to a name, which is a fair estimate, the present enumeration would give a population for the city and suburbs of 144,846, or, deducting 15,500 for the suburbs, would leave 129,346 as the population of the city proper. We have no doubt that the census, to be taken by the government in a few months, will verify these figures as substantially correct. We are quite sure the government enumeration can not be more complete or accurate than ours in respect to male adults and heads of families, and we regard the ratio of three inhabitants to a name as entirely fair.

We avail ourselves of this opportunity to congratulate the citizens of Indianap- olis on the healthy condition of business and the excellent prospects of the city in all respects. THE PUBLISHERS.
