The fire department of the city of New Albany has been conducted as a paid department since 1865. As now consti-

tuted, with one hook and ladder truck and four reel carriages, it is sustained at an annual expense of about $30,000, which includes the cost of fire plags. OLD LADIES HOME Southside Main street, opposite Upper Seventh. This institution was erected by W. 8. Cul- bertson, Esq,, for the benefit of needy and worthy widows, and has a provision for its future maintenance; he further set.apart the munificent sum of $150,000 as an endowment fund.
