OFFICIAL BOARD.
HISTORY OF WEST STREET M. E. CHURCH.
In the beginning of this organization it was thought to build a room for Sunday School purposes for the benefit of the Southern and Western part of Shelbyville, but Isom W'ray coming to its aid very liberally, with the help of Joshua Ennos and E. P. Jewitt, the present building was erected in 1891 M A. Farr was the first pastor, serving until 1896. The church grew from a small membership, under his pas- torate, to more than two hundred. Bro. R. H Moore, Rob Zaring and W. F. Smith have served the church up to the present time, in which it has grown beyond all expectations, reaching this present year 450 members, with a Sunday School second in the county. The church is in a very pros- perous condition, and will soon be one of the best appoint- ments in the Indiana Conference.

The Benevolent Protective Order Elks is purely a social and charitable organization, and was organized in New York City in 1867 It dispenses charity without ostentation, and has, per- haps, expended more like charity to the public than any secret order in the world. Shelbyville Lodge No. 457 was organized December 26, 1899, and now has more than a hundred members, who are among Shelbyville's most influential citizens Its social gatherings have been among the best ever given in this city.

The lodge pays $4.00 per week for sick benefits, and $1.00 multiplied by the number of members in good standing as a death benefit.

In December, 1899, a movement was started by the members to get a home of their own, and their present handsome new home shows how successful their efforts have been. The plan pursued by the lodge was to organize an association known as "Chillon Castle Hall Assaciotion," and sell to the members shares of stock.
