From photograph of one of the gas wells supplying Indianapolis. Flame 105 ft. high out of 4 in. pipe. Output, 18,000,000 cubic feet per day.
INDIANAPOLIS, by reason of its geographical situation and railroad facilities, has become a great city of 110,000 people. By the discovery of Natural Gas the doubling of its pop- ulation is insured. The daily out-put of the wells already drilled for the use of Indi- anapolis is over 300,000,000 cubic feet of gas-used for both fuel and light. A fire day and night without labor, and free from dust and smoke. Indianap- olis has gained a national fame for its wisdom in dealing with natural gas. There were three companies in the field, including the Standard Oil Co., but the people, fearful that combinations might be formed to shut off competition, and determined that gas should be supplied at cost, organized the Consumers' Gas Trust Co., 4,700 of the leading business men and manufacturers subscribing $500,000 within ten days, and placing all the stock in trust, so that it can never be controlled by any competing com- pany. The City Council has fixed the following maximum prices, which are equal to about one-third the cost of coal but are much above the rates which will result from com- petition :
Grates, $5.00 to $10.00 per annum ; Cooking Stoves, $6.00 to $12.00 ; Base Burners, $5.00 to $15.00 ; Furnaces, average size, $24.00.
SPECIAL RATES TO MANUFACTURERS.
It is estimated that it will require less than three years, at the above rates, to repay the money advanced to the Trust Co. for the plant, so that thereafter fuel and light will be supplied at cost, which means practically free gas to all future residents of Indian- apolis.
Indianapolis is noted for its low taxes, thrifty enterprises, cheap living, shady streets and pleasant homes. Ninety-six building associations, in operation, loan to the laboring people and all classes $1,000,000 per annum with which to build homes. This is the surest safeguard against unjust strikes, and the growth of socialistic ideas, which threaten manufacturers in other large cities.
A BELT RAILROAD surrounds the city, connecting with each of the fourteen railroads. Factories located upon this road are at the mercy of no one company for rates, as there are to each important distributing point from three to five competing lines.
16,000 mechanics and laborers are now employed in the various manufacturing enterprises in the city, in which there is invested more than $20,000,000. Tracts of land on the Belt road free to manufacturers. For information, address,
