The Efficient Human Machine

T HE human body is a highly complex, vitalized machine. It is perfect in design, infinite in construction, superb in efficiency. Its automatic steering gear and dust-proof bearings are beyond imitation. All other machines are but modifications of its principles and processes.

It is not only the highest type of mechanism, but it is subject to psychic and vital influences. It is self-operating, self-cleansing, self-oiling. It regulates its gear to meet stresses, strains and accidents. It recharges its batteries in self-defense against changes of weather, over-indulgences, infection and poison which obstruct requisite flow of subtle vital forces to propel the wheels of life.

Cared-for machines outlast neglected ones. Carelessness aided by ignorance in running your body machine means disaster. Most people run watches; many run auto- mobiles ; everybody runs a human machine. It was given you to run as efficiently as you can and as long as you can. It is your most valuable property. To run it smoothly and without pain, its minutest parts must be kept adjusted and regulated; supply it with proper fuel, air, water ; never abuse it, or debauch it with poisons; cherish it and keep it undefiled.

Wheels won't run without energy and energy won't generate if the boiler is scaly, furnace clinkered or pipes clogged. A slipped cog, a sprung shaft, a bent piston-the machine is dead. As with auto and watch, so with the human machine. Its boilers of existence won't generate enough vital power to turn the wheels if its parts are out of gear.
