April 4, 1853: Corkins Brown, Jacob Roberts, and John D. Thompson elected trustees of Brown township at an election held at Mt. Carmel.


Campbellsburg, April 11, 1853: Board of Trustees met at the depot for the purpose of organizing. Brown elected for three years; Roberts for two years; Thompson for one year. All sworn in by Nathaniel P. Mather, J.P. Robert Denny who was elected Clerk of township, sworn in by n. P. Mather. Peter Nicholson elected treasurer of township and filed bond of $1000. with n. P. Mather and Ralph Bogle as security. He also sworn in by n. P. Mather.


C-Burg, April 19, 1853: Board met and were all present. John D. Thompson, trustee of the original school district 6 town 3 north, range 2 and 3 east, Laid all the books and papers belonging to the said district before the Board and upon examination of the books and papers, it was ordered that certain worthless papers be destroyed, whereupon the President of the Board proceeded to make a bonfire of said papers.


Israel Holler, trustee of original school district 3 in 31, 2E appeared and delivered to the Board a bond from George A. Turner for the school lot in said district, which bond was delivered to the Clerk and put on file. Board then ordered that the Clerk make a written request upon the original District trustees of Brown twp. to deposit all books and papers in their possession appertaining to the school matters in their districts with the Clerk on or before the first of May next.


C-Burg, April 23, 1853: Met and proceeded to lay out the township in road districts. (For a description of these, see preface of "List of Road Hands".) Supervisors appointed: John Rosenbaum, Allen W. Brown, Joseph W. Jean, David Greene, Elisha G. Coen, William Collier and Riley H. Gould. Tax levied of 15¢ on each $100. value of real estate and personal property. 12ks for general benefit of township and 220 for road purposes.


C-Burg, May 14, 1853: Board met, the adjourned due to absence of Clerk.


May 7, 1853: Board met and proceeded to canvass the township to ascertain the condition of the school houses. After visiting the several neighborhoods the Board decided that there was a necessity for a school house to be built in the vicinity of Mt. Carnel and also one in the neighborhood of John D. Thompsons. They also found the Clifty district school house in want of sundry repairs and a stove. Also the school in district 3 in 41, 28 was found to be in bad condit- ion. It was therefore ordered that an election be held on the 31st of the

present month for the purpose of ascertaining whether the township shall be taxed for the purpose of building and repairing school houses in the twp. Trustee Jacob Roberts was only on duty half the day.


May 31, 1853: An election was held at Mt. Carnel on May 31st to see if the township should levy taxes for building and repairing school houses. John D. Thompson being absent on account of sickness, Walker Nicholson was appointed Judge of Election and was sworn in by Il. P. Mather. Nathaniel P. Mather was appointed to act as assistant clerk of election and was sworn in by Jacob Roberts. The votes cast were duly counted. 98 were against the tax and 2 for the tax.


C-Burg, June 18, 1853: Corkins Brown, trustee of original school district 2 in #31, 2E made return of the district account book and deed for school Lot from nathaniel Jenkins and Rebecca, his wife, to David Boyder, John Barnard and Nathaniel Jenkins, former trustees of said school district 2.


A petition of Peter Nicholson and 39 others to vacate that part of the road known as the Fredericksburg and Int. Carmel road, that lies between the point where it intersects the Cox's Ferry and Salen round and the point where it intersects the road known as the Andrew Keller and Clifty Mill road near H. H. Jsgriggs. Peter Nicholson and Elisha G. Goen appeared before the Board. Samuel Caulking, Joseph Moore and Bright Stacy appointed viewers.


A certificate from Jimisan Lee, trustee of original school district 3 in 41, 25 certifying that he had employed John C. Stuart to teach a school in the said district in the winter and spring of 1852 and 1853 of four months duration for the sun of $87.75. Treasurer ordered to pay.

C-Burg, July 18, 1853: A petition of William Shults and 32 others was presente : praying for a change of that portion of the Indie's Ferry and Wheeler's Mill road beginning at the point where the neighborhood road crosses the said road east of the dwelling of said william Shults and running east on the ridge of said house of said Shults; to run the said road past said Shults dwelling on the northwest side and pursue a west direction intil it pass the said house and thence a south direction til it intersect the present line of said road . . at Wheeler's Mill on Twin Creek. said line on John Pollards land until it pass lot number four in the town of Buena Vista belonging to Henry Hunter, thence west along said line through John Pollards land, thence west on the line between Robert Wood and Silas Pollard, thence west on the line between John Wood and Benjamin Lawyer, thence west on the line between Benjamin Lawyer and the estate of Andrew Stewart de- ceased, thence west on the line between John Hays and John C. Shade, thence west on the line between Thomas Richardson and john Fried til it intersect the road leading from Claysville to Saltillo. Alonzo F. Riley, Morrison Gordon and Elisha G. Goen appointed viewers.


Luke Teague applied to the Board for a release from working on the public highways for the current year, and it appearing to the satisfaction of the Board that said Teaque was not able from bodily infirmity to perform service on the highways and that he was too poor to pay the commutation therefor, he was released accordingly until the ist of May, 1854.


Alonzo 7. Riley presented a petition praying for a change in that part of the Andrew Kellar and Clifty mill road that lays between Henry H. Isgriggs and the top of the Clifty hill on the east, and locate the same on the line running west from H. H. Isgriggs house between Gordon and Riley and H. H. Isgriggs til it intersect the Bono road. nathaniel P. Mather, John Pro and James Blackwell appointed viewers.


Samuel Caulking, Joseph Moore and Wright Stacy, who were appointed to review that portion of the Fredericksburg and Mt. Carmel road that lays between its intersection with the Cox's Ferry and Salem road and its intersection with the Andrew Bellar and Clifty Mill road near H. H. Isgriggs made report that said section of road is of no public utility and is ordered vacated.

Sept. 14, 1853: Additional List of persons transferred from jefferson township to Brown township for school purposes: George Goldsby, Thomas Holler, Lucy Holler, Louisa Turner.

C-Burg, Sept. 13, 1853: n. P. Mather, John Pro and James Blackwell who were appointed to view a change in the Andrew Kellar and Clifty Mill road petitiones for by A. F. Riley and others report that said change would be of public utility. Board then granted change.


A.F. Riley, E. G. Goen and Ill. Gordon who were appointed to view a change in the Indie's Ferry and Wheeler's Mill road as petitioned for by William Shults and others report that said change would be of public utility. Board then granted change as follows: beginning on the ridge east of the residence of William Shults, thence running southwest one hundred and twelve rods, thence southeast eighty eight rods to intersect the old road at Twin Creek. At the request of E.G. Goen, supervisor of roads in district 5 it was ordered that the part of the Coxe's Ferry and Salen road laying in said district 5 be taken off said district and attached to district 2.
