Historical Sketch

"The Reformed Church in the U. S.", of which Eman- uel Reformed Church is a part, is the continuation of the Church of the Reformation days of the 16th century -the church Reformed of the then existing corruptions and abuses against which Ulric Zwingli preached in 1516. Our Church bases her faith on Jesus Christ; makes Him central in thought and life; and holds to the teachings of the Bible as set forth in the Heidelberg Catechism.

Emanuel Reformed Church was formally organized by the adoption of a constitution on May 28, 1859. There had been preaching services held more or less regularly, by the Rev. Fred. W. Dechant, who was pas- tor of the Newville, and St. Paul (organized Oct. 4, 1856) congregations. These services were held in the homes of the Reformed families who had come from Pennsylvania and Ohio-the Deckers, Houtzs, Erharts, Rahrers, Lesh's, Alspachs, Ravers, Amys,- and in the school bouse on Rock Creek, which place served the congregation until June 2, 1872, when the present Eman- uel church (since repaired), was erected at a cost of $1505, besides the loving labors of the members, many of whom lie in the quiet graveyard beside the church, restiog from their labors.

For some time the services were conducted entirely in German, then part English, and during Rev. Bretz's, pastorate, German was discontinued entirely. Emanuel was for some time a part of the charge with Newville and St. Paul; then Newville became seperate. In 1882, the First Reformed church at Bluffton was organized and became a part of the charge, until in 1899, it be- came independent and self-supporting, leaving the charge as at present-Emanuel and St. Paul.

For fifty years the congregation has upheld the gospel ; of Christ, by precept and practice, always liberal to the support of the gospel, the work and institutions of the church, and to every good work for the help and blessing of men. Let us face the future with hope and courage.

Fifty years It was a day long to be remembered Emanuel's celebration of fifty years existence was a success in every way.All worked faithfully to make it such and saw the fruition of their efforts. The pro gram was carried out without a hitch. Dr and the worthy and honorable history of the past ought to make all eager to do their best now and in the future Our life now is our time to do good.not after we are dead If we do not do it now, we can never do it. "Work while it is day, for Christman and other speakers were at the night cometh when no man can work. their best, as were the boys and girls - big girls too, - and the programs render- ed showed careful training and conse- crated talent, equaled by few country or city churches. The letters from pastors were fine, and bore helpful messages to all. The church despite the 14 year old wall paper, looked well, decorated with many flowers and the Reformed church colors, black, yellow, and red. Filled with happy, expectant people, who were not a whit disappointed, and who gave liberally, about $40 in all, $15.40 of which was for the Sunday-school Board. Emanuel church on May 30,1909, was an inspiring sight.
