LONG DISTANCE SERVICE

If you are not thoroughly familiar with the classification of long distance service and charges, read carefully the following explanation of the classifications and rates for toll service, as authorized by the Indiana Public Service Commission, in order that you may intelligently select the class of service best adapted to your needs and make the most economical use of the toll service facilities provided.

CLASSIFICATION OF TOLL CALLS

There are two general classes of long distance calls, known as "Station-to-Station" and "Person-to- Person" calls.

STATION-TO-STATION CALLS

A Station-to-Station call is one in which the person calling does not specify a particular person or department to be reached at the station called, but gives only the number of the telephone desired or the name or address under which the telephone is listed.

Charges for Station-to-Station calls will not be reversed; neither will any appointments be made on Station-to-Station cails, nor will a messenger be sent. All of these require the performance of a greater amount of work by the operator handling the call and a longer use of the circuits and equipment, and, therefore, must be charged for at the higher Person-to-Person rates. The cheaper evening and night rates apply only to Station-to-Station calls. The evening rates, which are in effect between 8:30 P. M. and midnight, are approximately one-half of the day rates, while the night rates, which are in effect from midnight to 4:30 A. M., are but one-fourth of the day rates, providing no evening or night rate is to be less than 25c. Remember that evening and night rates do not apply to Person-to-Person calls.

PERSON-TO-PERSON CALLS

A Person-to-Person call is one in which the person calling specifies a particular person or department to be reached at the called telephone. As it requires more effort on the part of the operator to establish such a connection and longer use of circuits and equipment, Person-to-Person calls are charged for at a rate approximately 50 per cent higher than Station-to-Station rates. The charges on a Person-to-Person call may be reversed, that is, collected from the called station. Appointments may be made to talk at

9

some future time and a messenger may be sent for the called party if desired. Appointment and messenger calls are both subject to a rate 20 per cent higher than the regular Person-to-Person call, on account of the additional labor involved and the service rendered. The actual cost of the messenger is also added in case a messenger ia sent. Person-to-Person calla, in some instances, are subject to what is termed report charges.

REPORT CHARGES

Orders for Person-to-Person service are accepted only under condition that a limited charge, known as a "Report Charge," will be made when under certain conditions it is impossible to establish communi- cation between particular persons. The Report Charge is approximately one-fourth of the initial Station- to-Station rate, with a minimum charge of ten cents and a maximum of two dollars. Report charges will be made when the person called or the one calling refuses to talk; when the called party is "out," "absent from the city," or when, on account of any circumstances not the fault of the Telephone Company, it is impossible to establish the connection after the called telephone is reached, providing that no charge shall be made in such cases where the delay, if any, is greater than one hour. Should the call be completed later in the same day, the Report Charge will be canceled.

CLASSIFICATION OUTLINE

Below is an outline of the classification of calle and rate showing the relationship between the different classes and subclasses of calls and between initial period and overtime rates. The Station-to-Station day rate is the basio rate upon which all other charges are computed.

Assuming that the Station-to-Station initial period rate between two certain points is one dollar, the following comparative rates for the various classes of service would apply:
