The chief aim of the sodality is to enkindle in the souls of its members a more than ordinary devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, so that, helped by the special protection of their great Mother, they may lead a truly Christian life, and in God's good time die a happy death. They are expected at all times to be energetic in furthering whatever tends to the honor of the Blessed Virgin; to strive earnestly by example as well as by words, to promote devotion to our Holy Mother in others ; to practice the works of mercy, especially toward Sodalists in time of sickness ; finally, to strive to acquire those virtues; which no Christian can be without, but to vie with each other in piety, purity, humility, modesty and dilligence in the dis- charge of the duties of their station in life.

The sodality receives Holy Communion on the first, and meets on the second Sunday of every month in the Lyceum Chapel.

CATHOLIC BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATIONS.

Catholics are warned not to become members of lodges and secret societies condemned by the Church, nor of any non-Catholic organizations which are liable, at any time, to fall under the ban of the Church. The safest plan for obtaining sick and death benefits is to affiliate with societies professedly Catholic, like any of the following :

ST. JOSEPH'S BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION.

This society has for its object the banding together of the men and young men of the Parish to strengthen them in their faith, and in the practice of their religion, and also to support them in sickness and to aid their families when death comes. It looks back over a history of more than half a century and is in a flourishing condition, having nearly two hundred and fifty members.

The meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month. in St. Andrew's Lyceum.

The officers for the present year are: Casper Jelly, president ; Henry Maurer, vice-president ; H. E. Stein, recording secretary ; Joseph M. Waltermann, financial secretary ; Wm. H. Torbeck, treasurer. Standard bearers, Herman Twehus and Ferd. Schwegman; assistants, Raymond Kleman and B. J. Sostmeyer. Standing committee, Peter Geier, John Habing, Henry Torbeck. Executive committee, Frank L. Waidele, Paul Geier, Jos. Stolle. Committee for sick, Frank Feldhaus, chairman; Wm. Kahle, secretary; Edw. Balling, assistant secretary; Albert Tor- beck, Henry Nuechter, John Beckschultz, Wm. Feldhaus, Edw. Issen and Michael Huth.

Spiritual director, Rev. F. A. Roell.

Rev. F. A. Roell, chaplain; Henry E. Schroeder, president ; Joseph Walterman, first vice-president ; Anthony Stolle, Jr., second vice-president ; Henry Nuechter, recording and corresponding secretary ; Harry Schroeder, financial secretary ; John Hafner, Sr., treasurer. Trustees, Jos. Schepmann, John Lux, Conrad Zwiss- ler, Frank Hursting, Wmn. Torbeck, Jr.

The drill corps, which is always in readiness to enhance the solemnity of Church celebrations, has acquired much proficiency in military tactics under the present officers, viz .: Captain Edward Valdois, Lieutenant Joseph Cook, Second Lieutenant Edward Balling. Drills are held weekly, and the regular business of the order is transacted in the Lyceum on the third Monday of the month.

HYMETTUS LITERARY SOCIETY.

For the past eight years this guild has steadily pursued its purpose of pro- moting the intellectual development of the young men and young women of St. Andrew's Parish. Within the present year, however, the scope of study has been narrowed down to the dramatic art, and its name has been accordingly changed to "The Saint Andrew's Dramatic Society."

Two dramas are to be staged annually, and the members have already shown marked histrionic ability in their two appearances on the stage. The membership is limited to twenty-five.

Rev. F. A. Roell is the director and Rev. Charles L. Kabey is assistant director.

SOME PARISH "DON'TS."

Don't forget you belong to St. Andrew's Parish.

Don't imagine the Parish belongs to you.

Don't forget the Fifth Commandment of the Church. Some do.

Don't forget September, December, March and June. Our pew rent year begins July 1.

Don't be stingy with God. Half rates and passes are reserved for the poor, such as widows, orphans and Pastors.

Don't ask your neighbors to build your Church and support your Pastors. You may some day forget yourself, and ask them to build your house and pay your grocer.

Don't steal your neighbor's porch chairs or his pew. If you are too poor to rent a seat, the Pastor will give you one, and God will excuse you-but don't steal.

Don't donate your spare dimes to the saloon, and then give your pennies to the collection.

Don't forget the Third Sunday of every month; our debt is still near the limit. Don't fail to take a receipt for pew rent. You might be sure you had paid, but the collector's word is as good as yours.

Don't use receipts to light the fire. The "Appeal to Reason," or any other vile sheet, will do-before you read them.

Don't ask people to climb over you into the Pew. The outer seat is good enough for them.

Don't rush into the Church until the congregation is at prayer. You might exhaust your stock of piety.

Don't sneak away from Mass before the Priest leaves the altar. You are in good company.

Don't leave Vespers to the women and children. An occasional Benediction would not hurt some male adults.

Don't consider Christian Doctrine useless. You are not too old to learn.

Don't keep children from baptism until they can ask for it. Such an infant once protested with an oath against being "drowned."

Don't crowd too near the Confessional. Your own story is sufficiently inter- esting.

Don't slip into the Confessional out of your turn. Your sins will "keep" a little while longer.

Don't criticize the preacher of God's word. The pulpit is no Chautauqua plat- form.

Don't fear you will confuse the preacher by listening. He has faced learned people before.

Don't spare the Priest's time. If you need ten minutes of it, take thirty. He may feel lonesome.

Don't fail to call at the Pastor's meal time. It whets his-appetite.

Don't put off making your Pastor's acquaintance till the doctor gives you up.

Don't flatter the Priest by calling him before sending for the doctor. It costs less, but doctors must live too.

Don't worry about what the Priest does with all the money he gets. You have troubles enough of your own.

Don't let any opportunity go by without finding fault with your Priests. It diverts attention from your own shortcomings.

Don't forget to ring up and inquire, "Who is dead?" whenever the bell tolls. It might be your mother-in-law.

Don't fail to find out just where the Priest is, if you call outside of office hours and do not find him in. He might feel slighted.

Don't let this be the last time you read this page. Your memory may need a tonic now and then.
