TOPEKA ROOM Reference
THE CITY OF TOPEKA.
The city whose name furnishes the caption to this article sixteen years ago, as a city. existed only in the imagination of a few brave, determined souls, who, with sagacious foresight, set their stakes, firm in the faith that here was their promised land.
Sixteen years ! not all of them "sweet," but each fraught with recollections, some gay and ludicrous, others tender and sad, to those of that little band who yet remain to gaze upon the full fruition of their earlier desires.
The busy hum of the school room, the sound of the hammer, the click click of the telegraph, and the shriek of the locomotive, are heard where but a few short years ago, the war whoop of the savage struck terror to the heart of the "pale-face."
It is useless to recaptulate its early struggles for the right, as that would be only repeating history, in addition to which space will not permit further retrospective views, hence we will "let the dead past bury its dead," and turn to the ever living present and glowing future of this queen city of a most royal State.
Topeka, the capital city of Kansas, contains about eight thousand inhabitants, and is situated in a central and commanding position, up- on the Kansas, or Kaw river, as it is sometimes called, about sixty- six miles from its confluence with the Missouri river. Its rapid in- crease in populatiou can be best illustrated by a comparison of the number of votes cast during the past nine years, to wit :

BUSINESS HOUSES.
Of these we will merely say that we have about 350 of the various kinds. among which are a number of wholesale and jobbing houses, together with fouudry, machine shops, wagon and carriage manufac -;

tories, mills and kindred establishments in other branches of industry, which we will not weary the reader by enumerating.
EDUCATIONAL INTERESTE.
These are all of a first class character. We have the Washburn ('ollege, under the anspices of the Congregational church, which is now agitating the question of commencing to put up and endow a very fine college upon their valuable quarter section, a short distance beyond the city limits, and which. if done, will be one of the finest structures of the kind in the west. The Episcopal Female Seminary, devoted exclusively to the education of females, the authorities of which are now erecting a fine building upon a twenty acre tract of land in the most beautiful portion of the city. The extremes of the new building are one hundred feet long by seventy-four deep. in the form of a letter H, two wings and a central connecting section. The building fronts east, but the west side presents nearly the same ap- pearance, and including the basement and attic, is five stories high. Lincolu School House is a very fine public school building, costing about $65,000, and $18.000 have been appropriated for the building of another school house north of the river. in the First Ward. In addition to these, there are the Harrison Street School, a very fine building, and numerous others scattered over the city for the con- venience of the population, but which it is unnecessary to specify.
OUR STATE HOUSE,
when completed, will truely present a magnificent appearance, being situated on a twenty acre tract similar to that of the Seminary above referred to, but nearer the business portion of the city, hence much more valuable. Only one wing is finished, at a cost of nearly half a million dollars, and when completed will prove a structure of which every Kansan may well feel proud. It is built of native ma- terial, the celebrated Junction City magnesian lime stone.
RAILROADS.
Our location places us in the direct line of nearly all the important railroad enterprises, either finished, in process of construction or pro- jected, not one of which will prove chimerieal, but all must neeces- sarily, and in no case at a very remote period, become accomplished facts. A simple list will be amply sufficient to illustrate this propo- sition : The Kansas Pacific ; the A. T. & S. F. R. R. ; the Lincoln (Neb.) and Topeka R. R. ; the Chicago & Southwestern ; the Pleasant
13
TOPEKA CITY DIRECTORY.
Hill. Lawrence & Topeka ; the Topeka, Ottawa, Ft. Scott & Memphis R. R. ; the Topeka, Burlington & Verdigris Valley R. R., and the Topeka & Southwestern R R., of which five will be direct eastern connections. Of these. the first two named are already in successful operation, and when they shall all be built, that fact alone will com- pel a centralization of all or a majority of the western roads at this point.
THE FUTURE.
If her past history, though so short, has been so glorious, and her present so prosperous under so many adverse circumstances. what may we not anticipate for her future? Her railroads, finished, in process of construction, and those sure to be built within the next two or three years, will make her the Indianapolis of Kansas. the consequent and inevitable commercial and business increase, together with the enterprise and public spirit of her citizens, her natural ad- vantages, local beauties, and superior educational facilities. will make her the Metropolis of our State, whilst all combined will prove her to the world to be, what is her highest glory. the Pride of every Kan- san's heart. Space will not permit a longer description, but we can truely say "the half hath not been told."
