STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE.

The streets of Topeka are named and the lots upon them num- bered according to a system which enables one easily to become acquainted and known in any given locality. The streets running north and south are named after the successive United States pres- idents, and those running east and west are numbered.

NUMBERING OF HOUSES AND PLACES OF BUSINESS.

In order to prevent confusion in numbering buildings, whenever such numbering became necessary, the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Topeka Association early adopted a system, which was approved by the Association, by which every twenty-five feet of front upon an avenue, street or alley may receive a number when built upon, which being systematical and uniform with like num- bers on other streets similarly situated, may be easily found by car- riers, or known by citizens at a distance from home. The lots on the original plat were all numbered in accordance with this system. The rule by which to find any number, or to add one, is as follows: Calculate the number of feet from the base line to the further cor- ner of the twenty-five feet in question, excluding thoroughfares; multiply by two and divide by twenty-five. The quotient will be the number required, if on the even side of the street; if on the odd side, a unit must be deducted. Topeka and First avenues were the original base lines, and divide the east and west and north and south of the city. All lots are numbered east and west from Topeka avenue, and north and south from First avenue.

PREFACE.

In introducing this my Fifth Biennial Directory of the city of Topeka to the notice, and I trust to the favorable consideration of my patrons and to the public generally, I have no apologies to offer, for I feel assured that it will meet the expectations of those mostly interested in it, both in point of accuracy and general con- tents, for I have labored arduously to insure its excellence in these particulars -the balance of the work, if deserving of any credit, I submit upon its own merit. The gratifying view which this direc- tory presents of the substantial growth of Topeka must be appre- ciated by all, and surprising to the oldest inhabitant. With an increase in population of nearly five thousand in less than two years, and a very decided progress in the way of solid and substan- tial improvements, insures the prosperity and growth of Topeka over every other city in the State. The commercial interests of the city were never more encouraging, or on a more solid basis, than at this time; and its manufacturing interests also afford an element of prosperity which should be encouraged and increased.

To the business community, who, through their liberal patron- age, have enabled me to publish this model directory, I return thanks, and trust they will be amply repaid by increased patron- age. For without such encouragement, a work of this kind could not be produced, as in addition to the manual and mental labor expended on its compilation, it requires an outlay of a much larger amount of money to publish it than is generally estimated for a work of this kind; and then it is not glory alone that prompts me from time to time to immortalize myself as a publisher of direc- tories. I expect to realize over and above the actual expense, a reasonable compensation for my work and for my experience, which enables me to supply a legitimate and reliable reference book. Further explanation I deem unnecessary in asking a continuance of the liberal patronage already bestowed on my publications, and the confidence and support of our business community for my next edition.

SAM'L RADGES.

HISTORY OF TOPEKA.

BY JOSEPH G. WATERS. Honi soi que mal y pense.

(Opinions of an enlightened press from advance sheets of this history.)

Accurate to a hair-where the facts suited .- Burrton Telephone. Deals too much in statistics .- Emporia News.

A talented writer, and one we would admire were it not Ellsworth Longhorn.

For the purposes for which it was written, we pronounce it as able an effort as we have ever seen written, by -!- Salina Journal.

A vigorous mind in a besotted body .- Wichita Eagle.

Mere stuff, and peurile calumnies .- Lawrence Sentinel.

A damnable, infamous falsehood, prevarication and lie .- Eleven- worth Times.

We know him-raised in the same county with him. He came from a part of Illinois which has done nothing but spew its vomit all over Kansas. His gratuitous fling at Atchison, that our claim as a town is based wholly on a Missouri slaughter house, fittingly emanates from the base ingrate and hellion that he is, and was produced simply in revenge for being INCARCERATED IN AN ATCHI- SON JAIL FOR DRUNKENNESS UPON OUR THOROUGHFARES, AND FOR DISTURBING A NEGRO MEETING HELD IN A BACK ALLEY ON THE BRAKES OF CLAY CREEK! We guess we are historians, too !- Atchi- son Champion.
