INTRODUCTORY.
After several weeks of incessunt labor, we present to the eiti- zens of Wichita, a general and business directory which we be- lieve will meet the wants of the public in this particular. The labor required in the making of a directory is considerable and indeed it is a delicato task, necessitnting good judgment on the part of the compilers, coupled with a persisteuey thut few men possess or caro to cultivate. Our conscientious purpose has been to make our work not only complete in every particular but altogether trustworthy. We have been to every residence in the city and have been extremely careful in the spelling of uames, and in view of the fact that the citizens of Wichita have been so often annoyed by so called directory publishers, wo desire to express our thanks for the uniform courtesy with which we wore treated, and our inquiries for information that no doubt seemed impertinent, were answered. Weare not so conceited in our ability as to claim perfection in our work, knowing that no book was over perfect especially where the compilers had to trust altogether to others for their information.
But we do claim that our work will show a degree of com- pleteness and a simplicity of arrangement that will bo appreci- ated by the generous citizens of Wichita.
.
We wish to call attention to another thing, and that is the en- tirety of this work, is a Wichita production, the same being done by the Wichita Eagle steam printing and binding establishment, and much credit reflects on this office for the neat appearance of our work.
And now that the labors of collecting, compiling aud printing our directory are finished, we wish before bidding adien to our friends to return our thanks to our patrons, who have so gonor- ongly patronized and nided us in the publiention of our work.
Hoping for their kind Indulgence and that we mmy merit u liberal patronage for similar works in the future, we bid you all, kind friends, adien.
The Publishers.

SOUTHWESTERN KANSAS AND WICHITA.
ADVANTAGES OF.
In n work like this, designed as it is for general reference, a pioneer history would be out of place and indeed it has been so well written by such eminent writers that it would be presump- tion on our part to attempt it. We will, therefore, confine our- selves to a few general remarks on the advantages Kansas and Wichita may possess for the investment of capital, or the mak- ing of n home in this favored part of the world.
As a state, Kansas is recognized us pre-eminent for agricul- ture, stock raising and dairy prodnet. Her laws ure liberal and protective, both for capital and Inbor; ber schools ure unsurpass- ed in many much older states; religion, like edneation, is free, untrummeled and progressive; her soil is the most productive in the world; the climate is one that has no malarial taint in il, healthful and invigorating; the state is free from public debt; her citizens energetic, thorough-going and intelligent, every year nd ding to their number by the influx of new muscle, bone and vigor, as well as capital; and it will not be a matter of surprise if the agrienltural resources, which now appear beyond computa- tion miny be in the lapse of time developed to a complete full- uess by the efforts of those who come to people one of the most magnificent of these United States. The elements are not more rhangenble thun the events and fortunes of n new country; tha Innd-marks and rolles of pioneer life are fast fading from view, and with our magnificent railroad system, stretching from ocean to ocean, the Amerlenn frontier will soon be n thing of the past ; yesterday n vast wilderness of pralrle, to-dny un empire -- citles und villuges are springing up us if by ungie all over this broad land. The wild flower of the plain, the prairie grass and tungled brush-wand have boon supplanted by rieb, waving fields of goldon grain; und in place of Indian "topees," or encampments, are the dwelllogs of busbandmen or populons and fourishing cities, and among the most favored and prosperous stands
WICHITA,
The "Queen City" of the Arkansas Valley, situated 212 miles southwest of Atchison at the junction of the Little and Big Ar- kansas rivers, It is not old in years, but in experience, which

makes men old and towns too, we suppose it is very nged. It is the county seat of Sedgwick county and was made a eity of the second class in 1872, sinee which time it has had a steady growth with occasional backsets, such as all growing western towns have experienced. Little more than one decade has passed and we havea busy little city of over 8,000 inhabitants, ranking third in the State, with all classes of business well represented, with as pushing, thriving, energetic set of business men as we have ever met.
Wichita's location gains it an advantage which the basiness men of the city were not slow to see, and at no distant day will result in the upbuilding of one of the best trade centers in the state.
Its main interest now is commerce and shipping (stock and grain), with a fair start in mannfactaring and no doubt its future rapid advancement depends to a great extent upon the early development of the latter interest and the natural advantages possessed by tlris city will at no distant day, make it one of the best manufacturing points in the state.
As a place of residence, Wichitn is without a poor in the slate for n city of its population.
-
In selecting a place, in which to locale permanently, a place where social relations are anch that our fuinflies may not feel ent off from kimtred ties and nasocintions where they may, be in possession of all that tends to benefit both civie and moral rola- tionship, is a point to be as we believe it is well considered, so that while we find remunerative employment for our capital, let it consist of brains, strong hands or money, we may know that our wives and children, our mothers and sisters are living in n congenial and ennobling sphere. The first point for considera- tion is the
.
SCHOOLS,
For this is the first round in the ladder that leads to all that is great, good and noble. The history of the schools dates from the beginning of Wichitu, and notwithstanding the rapid, vigor- ons growth and development of the city, the school system hus always been fully equal to all the requirements for the odaea- tion of the young to prepare them for the great battle of life. The citizens exert every effort to bring the mental and moral caliber of the city to as high a standard as its commercial lead- ers have its business interests.
The city is provided at present with three good school build-

'ings, employing one principal and cighteen tenchers. Provis. ion has been made for the erection and farnishing at no distant duy of an academy bailding at a cost of $25,000. This will nf- fard facilities for an education unsurpassed in the state. In ad- dition to those, Prof. P. C. Lewis has lately established a com- mercinl nud business college, where penmanship and book-keep- ing are made specialties.
Another element that has tended toward comenting the friend- ship of the business men and families of Wichita is the number und high character of the
BENEVOLENT ORGANIZATIONS
Of the city-the Masonic, Odd Fellows, Knights of P'ythins, Au- cient Order of United Workmen, American Legion of Honor, 'I'nruverein and Grund Army of the Republic, all in a donrish- ing condition, with the leading mien of the city as members.
CHURCHES.
The religions element of Wichita is very strong, much more so than one would expect to find in any western city, where the minds of ull are seemingly rugrossed in the race for the ova- sive but almighty dallar. Nive churches give accommodation to the Sabbath observing populace. The influence of the churches over all in this elty la grent and hus nided very motorinlly in rendering Wlehitn a most delightful placo of residence.
Another important factor in the advancement of the city is the
BOARD OF TRADE,
Organized in 1880, and is composed of over 80 members of the lending business men of the city.
The Board has for its principal object the promotion of the commercial and manufacturing interests of the city. The Board and its individual members are always ready and willing to give any information within their reach, to any person desiring to locate any kind of business in the city that will add to its wealth and prosperity. The following are its officers for the year 1883; A. W. Oliver, pres't; J. H. Black, see'y.
RAILROADS.
Wichita has at present two lines of road, one St. Lonis & San Francisco, direct from St. Louis and terminating at this point. The other, sonthern branch of the A . T. & S F. from Atchison and Kansas City, Chic- connection. Another road will be finished to this point within a year. giving direct connections with Memphis and the lower Gulf States.

CONCLUSION.
People are accustomed to say that the future is shrouded in darkness and while it is true that some of its nspeels and move- ments are unknown to ns, it is also true that the future is not entirely blank. The light of the past and present flashes forth in the future, revealing to us many of tho prominent fentures of the fuets that are to be. Glancing back but a few short years when the west was a barren wilderness nnd Wichita an Indian on- enmpment, and then taking n basty look into the happenings of the heart of the continent from then until now, and seeing that the vast region lying between the Missouri river and the Rocky Mountains contained but a few hundred inhabitants that the ad- vance couriers of the grent throng that was to come had just reached its eastern borders, and their cheery cry of "Westward ho !" yet vibrated in the air; that the germ of commerce hnd but just sprouted; that in all that region manufacturing was un- known, but that it now terms with a population of over 10,000,- 000; that the Indian encampment has become a city of metropol- itan features and one of the trade centers of the great southwest; that these millions are but the advance guard of millions yet to come and for whom there is ample room and opportunity. Tak- ing all these facts into consideration, we see clearly revealed in the great future, the fact that Wichita will soon be rife with the roar and hum of manufactories. This we announce in full con- fidence that it will surely come; that such is the fiat of destiny, the on-rolling wave of the inevitable that cannot be stayed, und it rests with the business men of this city, who are to control the coming tide of manufacturing enterprises to give to the world proofs of her fitness as a manufacturing as well as a commercial center.
No place in the west has better openings or greater induce- ments to offer to those desiring to enter commercial or manufac- turing pursuits. Any information desired by parties desiring to locate in the west will be gladly answered by J. H. Black, sec- retary of the Board of Trade.
