In 1890 the Beloit Light and Water Company installed an electric-light plant; the streets are illuminated by are lights, while the business housesand residences are very generally illumi- nated by incandescents. The light plant is modern in every detail, and as new improvements in the manipulation and hand-

ling of the electric current are brought forth they are promptly adopted, and as a result of this progressive spirit no city has a better system of electric lighting than Beloit.

The city has long been noted for its time streets, and espe- cially for its many miles of stone sidewalks. The present your is witnessing still further improvements in macadamizing, gul- tering, and curbing.

Beloit also enjoys what few cities in the state have, and that is a sewerage system, which already is extended over a consid. cradle portion of the town and are long will include the entire mmicipality.

A well-equipped lophone exchange is also in operation. and this will, without doubt. very soon be connected with other lo- cal exchanges to the east, and ultimately connection had with Kansas City.

The public schools are the equal of any in the state, are well attended, and teachers and pupils are enthusiastic in the work. of education. By reason of the well- known advantages to be gained from an attend nee at the Beloit schools, the population of the city has materially increased during the last year by the immigration of those who wished to afford their children better advantages than could be had elsewhere.

Beloit also has the State Industrial School for Girls, which is located at the north end of Hersey avenue, a short distance from the city limits. This school, which was originally founded by the 1.6. T. U., was transformed into a state institution ten years since. It has been very successful from the beginning, and has been the means of doing a vast amount of good. In al- dition to being given the advantages enjoyed by those who at- fond the public schools of the state, the girls are also taught all branches of housekeeping and domestic economy, and of late those evincing any talent for special work, such as music, art, etc., are afforded advantages in those directions. While the discipline is strict, the school is far from a prison, the girls be- ing given greater liberties than usually accorded those attending convents and church schools generally.

It is not the province of this article to dwell at length on the many advantages to be derived from a residence here in the Queen City of the Solomon, for the limits of this volume will not permit the naming of a tithe of the reasons why Beloit is a good place in which to live, but attention should be called to

32

History of Beloit City.

the fact that it is a city of churches, all the principal denomi nations being represented. The church buildings are substans. tial, and a credit to the people who have given of their moms liberally that they might be built.

In these days of secret fraternities an article relative to the advantages of any town as a place of residence would be incom- plete without reference to them. Beloit hus most everything in this line, and any one afflicted with the "jiner" habit must in- derd be hard to please who is unable to find congenial compas- ions within the portals of some one of the numerous lodges.

In conclusion, we will again remark that Beloit is a good place in which to live, and it is being made better and better as the months and years roll by. Its people are good, hospitable, and generous, and extend a cordial invitation to others to come and enjoy life in the best city in the state.

The city of Beloit was organized as a city of the third class by order of Hon. Andrew S. Wilson, judge of the twelfth ju- dicial district, in August, 1872. It was declared to be a city of the second class by proclamation of Giov. John P. St. John, March 10, 1879.

Beloit Street Guide.

The business blocks and residences throughout the city are numbered in accordance with what is known as the " decimal system." the base or dividing lines being Main street, extending east and west, and Mill street, extending north and south.

Under this system, 100 numbers are set apart for the lots be- tween every two streets in the city. Commencing at Main street with 100, numbers increase, with the even members on the right and the odd numbers on the left, proceeding from such base line until the next street is reached, where the first number is 200 on the right and 201 on the left, and so on to the next street, to the city limits. The north and south streets are divided at Main street ; that is, north of that street are designated as North Mill street, etc .; south, as South Mill street, etc. The east and West streets are divided at Mill street in like manner, as Fast Main street, West Main street, etc. In the business portion of the city the numbers in a block usually end with 22 and 23. but in the residence portion, where most of the residences

£

31

Beloit Street Guide .

occupy tracts with from 50 to 200 feet frontage, the munch is usually end with 13 and It in each block.

The simplicity of this system enables every person to readily locate any address, and it at the same time Furnishes an accurate idea of the distance to any locality in the city. For instance, it being desired to go to the residence of a person residing at No. 713 on any street, it is known without inquiry that such resi- dence is between the seventh and eighth streets from the initial streets used as base lines, for the purpose of this system of man- bering Main and Mill streets being reckoned as First street. It is also known that such number, being an odd one, is on the left-hand side of the street as we go out, and the number further indicates that it is at or near the end of the block, probably the last house in such block.

Mill street commences at the river and extends north to the city limits.

The north and south streets west of Mill street are as follows, respectively: Bell, Chestnut, Lincoln avenue, Murphy street, and Independence avenue.

The north and south streets cast of Mill street are as follows : Hersey avenue, Campbell avenue, Walnut, Pine, and Poplar; and in East Beloit, or Sturgis' Addition : Sturgis street, Diane street, and Park avenue. Walnut street commences at Main and extends north to the city limits; River street commences at Court street, next east of South Campbell avenue, and extends south to limits. Brooklyn avenue commences at the east end of Elliott street and extends south to Asherville road. With the above exceptions, all the north and south streets extend entirely across the city, although Bell street is not open south of Main.

Main street extends east and west the entire length of the city.

Parallel with and south of Main, the streets are as follows, respectively : Court, South, Clinton, and Elliott.

Clinton and Elliott streets extend east from River street only.

North of and parallel with Main, the streets are numbered, commencing with Second, and so on to Eighth, inclusive.
