Topeka in 1869.
As I compile the last pages of the new Directory for 1893-94, I have before me a copy of one published in 1869-the first one I issued in this city. It was a book of 275 pages, neatly printed, and covered the ground fully, amply elaborating facts, and to some extent, perhaps, indulging in the license accorded the historian and the poet. The book was no larger, if as large as a second reader ; but it was a creditable piece of work, and compared with the Directory of this year as the Topeka of that time compared with the Topeka of to-day. Both were the germs that have expanded from year to year, until we feel that they are worthy of exhibition at the Columbian Fair as models of their kind.
But fully as Topeka is appreciated by the average resident, it is only by a retrospective- view that one is able to correctly note progress made. At that time. Col. C. K. Holliday was Mayor of the city, which was divided into three wards, and a marshal and four policemen were found abundantly sufficient for protection and the preservation of peace-which fact certainly indicates that never, even in its childhood, was it turbulent or otherwise than decorous and well-behaved ; and I recall with vivid pleasure, which years cannot dim, the kindly, genial, warm-hearted, generous sociability that prevailed. Then neigh- bors were friends, and not merely "those people who live in the next house."
Sidewalks and crossings were mostly matters of rose-hued contemplation ; in lieu of electric lights, (the possibility of such a thing had not yet been con- ceived by the. mind of man,) lanterns were a part of our regular evening equip- ment when the- moon did not light us ; and a glance at the ancient Directory 'shows that, except' Kansas avenue, the streets were not numbered. One's loca- tion was designated as being. on the east, west, north or south side of -, be- tween certain streets or avenues. Indefinite as this now seems, I have never heard that it did not answer its purpose admirably.
Deep, loud, long and deserved as are the anathemas hurled at our own miserable bridge, which is at once a menace to life and a disgrace to the city it misrepresents, how many people living here now know that twenty-five years ago a poor, frail, rotten, picayunish little pontoon swung from shore to shore, -- 69

swaying, shivering, rocking and writhing if but so much as a Kansas zephyr caressed it, and which with each recurring flood broke from its moorings, to be followed by an anxious crowd of citizens, captured if possible and hauled igno- miniously back on wagons, or sorrowfully abandoned to float gaily down to Lawrence-our hated rival then-to rest upon her dam until, utterly wrecked by another freshet, its fragments mingled with nameless debris and were swept into oblivion ?
In one respect, at least, the future of the Metropolis of Kansas was fore- shadowed by something more substantial than prophetic visions. We had, even at that early date, eleven religious organizations, seven public schools, and for higher education the Episcopal Seminary, "which was built with funds secured by the Rev. Charles Calloway, one of the first missionaries to Kansas." That was the nucleus of our own beautiful Bethany College. Euclid Acad- emy, located over 129 Kansas avenue, in the old State Building ; M. A. Pond, principal. Washburn College, of which the old Directory says, "The perma -. nent buildings will stand on a beautiful ridge one mile southwest .of the Capitol, Gen. John Ritchie having generously donated a quarter-section of land for the site"; by which we see that religious and educational tendencies were inherent in the people who cradled the city in its infancy ; and if it cannot be said "they" builded better than they knew," we can at least say they laid deep and broad their foundations and builded well.
Topeka began life endowed with enterprise and considerable Yankee shrewdness, and its business transactions, in proportion to population and facili- ties, were larger than now. '
Something of surprise-almost of awe-steals over one as he recalls the prominent people and firms that were, but are no more.' 'On the hill where the sunset's glory lingers longest are the graves of scores whose names and memo- ries are cherished, and whose good deeds live after them ; others have helped to people the great West, and are lost to us in its crowding millions ; while a few are still a part and parcel of the town their energy and devotion so largely aided in creating ;- but at this time only four firms remain that have existed unchanged and continuously in business. These are. Barnum & Co., Burkhardt & Oswald, John Kaczynski, and George Handley. None remain on their orig- inal place of occupancy except S. Barnum & Co. Of the thirty-two attorneys then resident, eleven died here, and but three remain-John Guthrie, J. D. McFarland, and J. H. Moss. For one entire firm prominent in that early day

-- Martin, Case & Burns-we mourn. Two are in their honored graves, and one is in the United States Senate. Alas for human greatness !
Of 12 hotels, 12 real-estate dealers, 12 meat markets, 15 dry goods stores, I I boot and shoe stores, 7 lumber yards, 6 millinery stores, 6 sewing-machine agents, 5 newspapers, and 4 mills, all are gone; not one remains. Of 22 gro- cers, John Kaczynski alone is left, and he has twice changed his location. Of S drug stores, but one, Rowley Brothers, is in business now, and the firm was then Rowley & Co. Of 4 banks and banking institutions, but one remains as originally named, Guilford Dudley.
Of 18 saloons which flourished and were considered indispensable to the comfort of the masses, we say without a tear, all gone ; 3 breweries, dead with- out a hope of resurrection. Several wholesale liquor houses that did a thriving business, and gambling-houses and other disreputable resorts which abounded, have been constitutionally or statutorily abolished and 'swept from existence by the strong arm of the law or the equally potent voice of public opinion.
We stand with bared heads as this ghostly pageant files slowly by from out the twilight of the past quarter of a century ; but we turn hopefully to :. living issues, and see that sufficient unto the day have been and will be the "number who replace those who served well their day and generation and retired from the stage of action.
Perhaps nothing, not even the contrast of the two Directories side by side, illustrating fairly and impartially the two eras, could impress upon the reader's mind the startling difference between the towns of 1869 and' 1893 as the follow- ing advertisement, which I copy verbatim from the old publication :
