INTRODUCTION
Railroad, and the first town in Kansas to have a railroad. It was one of the starting places of the Pony Express, and a city where some of America's greatest railroad heads, indus- trial leaders, agriculturists, writers, journalists, churchmen and statesmen were developed.
In this connection might be mentioned such celebrities as John J. Ingalls, one of the two Kansans in the Hall of Fame at Washington, D. C., premier Senator, statesman and writer; the other Kansan in the Hall of Fame, U. S. Senator and Governor of Kansas, George Washington Glick; Samuel C. Pomeroy, Kansas' first U. S. Senator; John A. Martin and W. J. Bailey, former governors of Kansas; Ed Howe, noted writer and founder of the Atchison Globe; Gen. Harry Smith, Commandant of the Seventh Corps area of the regu- lar Army; B. P. Waggener, attorney and legislator; Walt Mason, poet (started his career on the Globe); Amelia Ear- hart, noted flyer; Rev. Chris Reisner, rector of the largest Methodist church in the world; Mateel Howe Farnum, author of "Rebellion," Pictorial Review novel award; Ray Holland, editor of "Field and Stream"; Eugene Howe, writer of the "Tactless Texan" column; Gene Dennis, psychic won- der girl. The last six named were born and raised in Atchi- son. Atchison has figured in the following famous books: "Rebellion," "Plain People," "The Story of a Country Town," and "My Gun Dogs."
Schools and Churches
The additional facilities of Atchison mark the city as an educational center. Atchison has nine public schools, in- cluding one senior high school and two junior high schools, with 2,633 children in attendance. In addition, Atchison has five parochial grade schools, with 653 pupils, and two senior colleges with 768 students.
St. Benedict's College, with its group of modern college buildings situated on the bluffs of the Missouri River, is an inspiring view. Of particular interest is the new $1,000,000 monastery-a perfect example of Old World monastic archi- tecture transferred to the New World. This building, copied after the Benedictine monasteries in northern Europe dur- ing the Middle Ages, is in the main of the Tudor Gothic architecture, but many features of the more ornate and earlier pointed Gothic are in evidence. This building is con- structed of native limestone from a local quarry just south of Atchison.
Mt. St. Scholastica Academy and College and Maur Hill Preparatory School for Boys both have very beautiful cam- puses and modern buildings. The new Mt. St. Scholastica Chapel of Norman architecture, with its beautiful rose win- dow, its exquisite wood carvings and its Italian and Tennes- see marble, is well worth seeing.
There are 25 attractive churches in Atchison, repre- senting 18 denominations.
Parks and Recreation
Jackson Park, 120-acre park owned by the City, is the Mecca of people from near and far, who enjoy its lovely iris- bordered drives and picnic in its pleasant surroundings. The City also maintains five other small attractive parks. Near Atchison are several large lakes where there is excellent bathing, fishing and boating.

INTRODUCTION
Stony Cliff is an artistic and architecturally-perfect rock city in miniature. It is especially beautiful at night on account of illumination, but it is worth driving miles to see at any time.
Potato Hill Farm was the farm home of the late Ed Howe, famous Atchison newspaper editor, writer and phil- osopher. From his home the scenic view is most inspiring.
Financial Facilities
Atchison's commercial banks and building and loan establishments have close to $20,000,000 in resources. The city and community have large resources, this being one of the wealthiest communities per capita in the state.
Industry
Atchison is a city of diversified industries, and because of this one will find high purchasing power and continuous prosperity on the part of the citizens of Atchison and its environs. This is an iron-foundry center, there being three ·
large iron foundries here, one of which does a national busi- ness in foundry work and the manufacture of finished rail- road equipment. The shops of the Missouri Pacific Railway are located here.
Atchison ranks fifth in Kansas as an industrial city, and ranks fourth in Kansas and tenth in the U. S. in its flour-milling industry. It is a manufacturing point for corn products, and home of large mixed feed mills. The combined grain storage capacity of the elevators and flour mills in Atchison totals approximately 2,500,000 bushels. Atchison is also the home of two up-to-date seed concerns, which wholesale clean and processed seeds that are shipped throughout this territory.
Other industries include an 18,000-gallon-capacity in- dustrial alcohol plant, an overall and work clothing factory, a bookbinding and stationery supply factory, a mausoleum factory, laboratories and a factory manufacturing moisture- testing equipment and grain germinators, a tent and awning factory, a shoe leather findings factory and leather products plant; five butter, cheese and ice cream factories, a 50-ton- capacity ice manufacturing plant, two modern hatcheries, a soft drink bottling works, and three greenhouses. There is also a poultry and egg packing plant with a capacity of 20 carloads per week, with a nation-wide business, and at this time an egg-drying plant is in operation.
Wholesale Trade
Atchison is an important wholesale center. Wholesalers sell to a large area, particularly to the south and west of here. The city is one of the largest wholesale centers in this area, having a large wholesale hardware establishment, a large wholesale drug concern, a sporting goods house, several beer distributors and a tobacco and candy concern.
Agriculture
Agriculture is one of the largest and most important single industries in Atchison. Northeast Kansas, southeast Nebraska, northwest Missouri and southwest Iowa compose a section referred to as the "garden spot of the Central West." The quadrangle excels in the fecundity and variety of its agricultural resources. The Atchison trade territory
15
INTRODUCTION
is a section where the climate and rainfall permit the great- est diversity of horticultural and grain crops. Atchison is the center of a large orchard belt that has growing and in production some 3,000 acres of orchards.
Transportation
Atchison is served by four railroads, a bus line and several large truck companies. There are many miles of hard-surfaced and gravel roads leading into Atchison, and because of this fine network of good roads, Atchison is the hub of many important highways.
Retail Trade
Atchison is on the map in northeast Kansas as a retail center. Complete and varied retail stocks are carried in all lines of merchandise. Atchison is the trade center for ap- proximately 45,000 people within a 20-mile radius. The di- versity of industries makes it possible to have a steady retail business. Atchison depends much on agriculture, but there are many industries with large payrolls. Atchison's retail sales have been as much as $25,000,000 annually, and are near that figure at the present time.
The Atchison Chamber of Commerce is always glad to answer inquiries and to give additional information con- cerning this city.
