BELL SIGNALS.

Fire alarms are sounded upon the tower bell at Fire Department head- quarters by striking the number of the signal station nearest to the fire, in the following manner: If for box 4, four distinct strokes and repeated; if for No. 13, one stroke, a short pause, then three strokes, and repeated, thus: 1-111, I-III, etc .; and if for 22, II-II, II-II, etc; 22 is sounded for all fires within the district bounded by Fourth, Ninth, Harrison and Monroe streets. Ten strokes, and repeated, followed by the number of the signal station nearest to the fire, is the second alarm, for a serions fire. Three strokes, followed by twelve, and repeated, thus: 3-12, 3-12, etc., is the general alarm for a very threatening and dangerous fire. This calls the entire fire department and a large detail from the police department. Two strokes, slowly, indicates "fire out."

For fires south of the river, one long whistle.

For fires north of the river, three whistles.
