INTRODUCTION

C. B. PAGE DIRECTORY CO., Publishers, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1947-1948 edition of the Monroe and West Monroe City Directory, our eleventh edition.

Confidence in the growth of Monroe's and West Monroe's wealth, industry and population, and in the advancement of their municipal and social activities, will be created as sections of this directory are con- sulted, for the directory is a mirror truly reflecting Monroe and West Monroe to the world.

The enviable place occupied by C. B. PAGE directories in offices, stores, libraries and homes, has been established by rendering the best in directory service. With an unrivaled organization, having the court- eous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the two cities.

SIX MAJOR DEPARTMENTS

The several essential departments are arranged in the following order :-

THE BUYERS' GUIDE, printed on tinted paper, contains the adver- tisements of some of the leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Monroe and West Monroe. These pages will be found par- ticularly interesting and instructive to substantial purchasing factors. The advertisements have been carefully grouped by departments and are in- dexted under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best and, as such, merits a survey by all buyers anxious to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. The commun- ity's activities, in many interesting phases are authentically pictured. In an ambitious and progressive community like Monroe and West Monroe, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is very great and, frequently, pressing. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the liberal support the city directory enjoys in the many fields which it serves.

THE MISCELLANEOUS SECTION. In this section is a complete list of officials, churches, etc.

THE LIBRARY BRIGHAM YOUNG UN VERSITY PROVO, UTAH

THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents, business firms and corporations. Features of this section are inclusion of the wife's name in parenthesis following that of the husband, the insertion of the number of minor children after the names of the parents and the designation of colored people with ""," the publisher is very careful in the use of this @ designation, but is not responsible in case of error. A similar list for West Monroe is also included.

THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY. This department lists the various manufacturing, mercantile and professional interests in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable epitome of the business interests of the community. "The Directory is the common intermediary between Buyer and Seller." As such it plays no small part in the daily doings of the busi- ness world. "More goods are bought and sold through the Classified Busi- ness Directory than through any other medium." A similar department for West Monroe is shown.

THE STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE AND DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS. In this section the names of the streets and avenues are arranged in alphabetical order; the residences and business houses are arranged numerically under the name of each street and avenue, and the names of householders and business concerns are placed opposite the num- bers. Ownership of home property is indicated by the character ""," placed immediately after the name of the householder. After this is shown the telephone number, if any. A similar guide for West Monroe is included.

THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, combining Monroe and West Monroe.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the city directory as an advertising medium, with assur- ance that it will bring a commensurate return.

MONROE AND WEST MONROE "THE TWIN CITIES OF THE OUACHITA"

Monroe and West Monroe, situated on opposite banks of the beautiful Ouachita River, have a combined population in 1947 of 46,000. These two modern cities are the trading centers of a vast territory in Northeast Louisiana with a total population of 312,000. The Ouachita River, ranked by the National Geographical Magazine as the third most beautiful river in the United States, is navigable from New Orleans through Monroe to Camden, Arkansas. A series of locks and dams across the river makes the stream navigable during twelve months of the year. In addition to water transportation, the Twin Cities are served by the Missouri Pacific, Illinois Central, Arkansas-Louisiana and Missouri, and Tremont and Gulf Rail- roads. Delta Air Lines provides three flights in each of the east-west di- rections, providing adequate airline service for mail, passenger and air ex- press. Truck and bus lines operated in Monroe reach every part of the United States. Thirteen hardsurfaced roads radiate in all directions from the Twin Cities, furnishing excellent transportation facilities which are unexcelled by any southern city. Natural gas fields in the immediate vicini- ty of the Twin Cities provide an inexhaustable supply of natural gas and also excellent industrial opportunities.

Three high schools, nine grade schools, three business colleges and Northeast Junior College of Louisiana State University provide unusual educational facilities. Churches of all leading denominations are available.

Two golf courses, two beautiful parks, unusual fishing facilities pro- vide outstanding recreational facilities for Twin City residents. There is also the Swayze Municipal Natatorium which is free to the public.

No large cities are located nearer than one hundred miles to the Twin Cities which creates a natural trade center. Home ownership is a Twin City hobby and a very large per cent of our citizens are home owners. Monroe and West Monroe are in the center of a large and natural agri- cultural district. Sixty-two per cent of the total income of sixteen North- east Louisiana parishes comes from agriculture and nineteen per cent from industry, providing well balanced sources of economic lifeblood for the trade interests of both wholesale and retail fields of the Twin Cities.

Retail trends in Monroe (figures for West Monroe not available) re- flect a tremendous amount of retail business done in this city. Total retail sales by years follow :
