S. he declined to have or take any part in the Secession movement and being a foreigner and never having yet applied for eitizenship he had a very good reason for not meddling with a busi- ness which was so much against his prin- ciples that after the war actually broke out he was often asked to join some Mil- itary Co., and thereby assist the Rebellion. but as he often deelined, as he did not wish to take up arms against the U. S., that he then turned to settle up his interest in the firm to which he was attached and return north, but his partner had not the means to do so and he was either obliged to leave all he possessed or else remain until means eould be found to satisfy his demands, that in the spring of 1862, he was told that he must join the army or leave the country, and thinking that the war would soon be at an end, the Union restored and that the only way in which he could save his share in the firm would be to join the army for a short time. He left Baton in


May 1862, as a Pvt. in Co. B, 9th La. Inf .. that finding he could not retire as soon as ex- rected he had hopes to resign after being elected Jr. 2nd Lt., that the election taking place only a short time before the siege of Port Hudson, he was captured by Gen. Banks, July 9, 1863, that he is well ware of the wrong he committed in joining the Southern Army since can only plead as an excuse that compulsion outweighed inelin- ation, that he wishes to take the Oath so that he can be released from prison and enjoy the rights and protection of the U.
