RIDLEY'S
DIRECTORY
OF
NORTH AND SOUTH ADAMS.
EMBRACING
A List of Residents ; Churches, with their Officers ; Corporations, Manufacturing Companies, Schools, Town Officers, Masonic Lodges, Temperance Organizations and other Miscel- laneous matter of general interest.
Canvassed by WILLIAM W. PRICE.
NEW HAVEN, CONN. : Printed by F. L. Goddard, 131 Union Street. 1872.
INTRODUCTORY.
In order to give the Town of Adams that prominence which it merits among the Towns of this Commonwealth, as well as to add to the convenience and benefit of its citizens, we have with much labor and at considerable expense pre- pared this its first Directory.
The rapid growth and business enterprise of North Adams, especially, seemed to warrant an undertaking of this kind, and we feel assured that the present volume will supply a need long felt.
It has been our aim to embody in this work every thing of a local character which would be of interest; and in the Miscellaneous Department much valuable information will be found in regard to corporations, churches, schools, secret so- cieties, etc .; thus enabling the reader to ascertain at a glance many facts, which might, otherwise, require long and extended research.
The season of the year in which our canvass was made was disadvantageous, and many obstacles presented themselves, but as far as circumstances would allow, the canvass has been thorough. Some difficulty was experienced in ascertaining the names of many of foreign birth, and their names not being intelligible to the canvasser, may be mis-spelled. This, how- ever, was a matter entirely beyond our control, and their names are given as the sound would imply.
A Directory is always looked upon, especially by strangers as an index of the business prosperity of a town ; and we are gratified with the fact that the merchants of this place, have wisely availed themselves of this means as a valuable adver- tising medium, and the public are invited to look at our adver- tising pages to find the wide awake business men of Adams.
We are under great obligation to the press of North Adams, for their furtherance of the enterprise. Mr. Angell, of the Hoosac Valley News, contributed in no small degree to its success, having favored the project from its start by repeated kindly notices through the colums of his valuable journal. The Messrs. Robinson's of the Transcript, were also with us heart and hand in the enterprise, and approved through the colums of their valuable weekly, the idea of a Directory for Adams.
To the merchants, manufacturers and others who have ma- terially aided us in the prosecution of this work by their en- couragement and patronage our thanks are tendered.
The Directory is now before you, and we trust it may meet the approval of all, and answer the purpose for which it was designed.
J. RIDLEY.
