Note.

These lists from the Town book "Lands and Ways 1711-1747" give the names of all those entitled to share in the common land of the Town of Eastham when the great division was made in 1715.

Other inhabitants in the Town who were not recognized as "Townsmen" in the way of having proprietary interest therein were few and such as were noted from the records appear under "Resi- dents not Townsmen."

What is here presented gives a fairly accurate census of the town of Eastham in 1715 as far as relates to heads of families or those who were of full age.

The orthography of all names appear as on the original record. Words in brackets only being interpolations of the compiler.

A list of all the families, with the number of persons in each, living within the bounds of "Ancient" Eastham in 1790, and some .

valuable additions, is being prepared for early printing to supplement this present list.

Exceptions to the General Drawings.

John Doane, Esq., drew lot 129 in the "upland" and lots 96 and 97 in the "wood lots" divisions. Samuel Harding drew lot 112 in the "upland" and lots 77 and 156 in the "wood lots" divisions. Lieutenant John Knowles drew lots 21 and 75 in the "wood lots" division only, one of them "for his tenement at Pochy." Simon Newcomb drew lots 131 and 134 in the "wood lots" division only. Jonathan Collins drew lot 101 in the "upland" division only, specified to cover his rights in both divisions. Samuel Horton drew let 97 in the "upland" and lot 70 in the "wood lots" divisions. The upland lot was cancelled and the wood lot was specified to cover his entire right. .

Residents not "Townsmen."

Isaac Pierce had his land mentioned as a boundary. He evi- dently was a resident. James Robins m. Thankful Higgins in Eastham, April 15, 1714. "The way that comes from James Robin's house" is frequently mentioned as a bound. John Taylor is men- tioned as bounding one lot with his land. As "Taylors" appear in Eastham later he was probably a resident. Richard Bishop, Thomas Roberts, . Thomas Williams, Thomas Crosby, George Godfrey, Jonathan Cobb, William Dyer, George Ward, George Crispe, Moses Hatch, Thomas Bills, Abraham Remick and John Sunderland all were residents between the settlement of the town and 1715. Many were accepted as "townsmen" and were legal voters. Some of the above left no male issue. Some sold their rights and moved away. Among the inhabitants at various dates there were twenty-six family names in 1675. Thirty-five in1695. Between forty and fifty in 1715 and one hundred and six in 1790, of which twenty-five were not "Cape" names, and two or more were probably those of Portuguese sailors or fishermen who had settled there.
