PREFACE.
WE herewith present our first volume of the ARLINGTON DIRECTORY. We wish to put on record the fact that it has been well received and patronized by advertisers and subscribers alike.
As we announced in our prospectus we have printed a street or elite list of residents of the principal streets. There was no necessity for doing this. We had been accustomed to print double lists, however, in larger towns and cities, and have found this list has always become popular among the ladies in their homes and added largely to our sub- scription list.
We have tried to compile a complete list of the residents and pub- lish the societies, clubs, etc. We have done the best we could with the information given us and considering the fact that we had no preceeding directory to go by. We have had a map prepared expressly for this book, and as there has been no map published heretofore or recently, it will be found useful. As the town voted to change the name of Arlington avenue December 1 to Massachusetts avenue we have made the change to conform to the new name.
We return thanks to all those who have kindly aided us and cour- teously treated our canvassers.
Our advertisers represent the men of enterprise in this town and adjacent cities. We bespeak for them a liberal patronage from our readers.
We expect to publish the Directory as often as it is required, and as the town is growing and changes taking place, it will soon be a neces- sity every few years.
Respectfully,
EDWARD A. JONES,
Publisher.
