Preface

This number of Arlington Directory makes the seventh volume which we have published.

We return our thanks to all who have answered our in- quiries and aided us in any way while collecting data for publication ; also to our advertising patrons for their orders. We are glad to say they include most of the leading and en- terprising merchants of the towns represented.

The Lexington Directory will be issued in a separate volume. The book is bound in cloth as heretofore, and no doubt will be indispensible as well as ornamental to the centre table in the home, and usful in the office.

DIRECTIONS FOR GIVING AN ALARM.

When a fire is discovered, go to the nearest box to the fire, pull the hook down once and let go. By listening at the box a small bell will be heard, which indicates that the alarm is being given. If possible, wait at the box and direct the firemen to the fire. Never send an alarm for a fire seen at a distance. Never give a second alarm for the same fire after the depart- ment has arrived, without an order from the officer in command at the fire.

Never open a box except to give an alarm of fire.

Opening the door does not give a fire alarm. Pull hook down on inside door and let go.

Telephone Alarm-Telephone subscribers are requested to call the Central Fire Station in case of a fire, giving the exact location of the same.

CHARLES GOTT, Chief of Department.

By hard work, try investing and speculating as others have done, and become rich; remember the first step to wealth is to own your own home, and not throw your hard earnings away to landlords and have nothing; now don't go away out 10 or 15-cent carfare from Boston, when you can buy land and houses just as cheap adjoining North Cambridge, where it is building up fast, and where you can sell or rent your place very quickly; good house lots at 5 cents per foot and upwards; town water in front of lots, shade trees on sidewalks; stone given free to build all cellars; money loaned to build; good many lots fronting on Massachusetts Avenue; no taxes or interest for three years; titles guaran- teed See
