HISTORICAL SKETCH.
IT being deemed expedient, on the ground of their better accommodation, by some members of the First Congregational Church in North Bridgewater,* who resided in the south part of the town, to organize a new church among themselves, - accordingly, on December 19, 1836, Dea. SILVANUS FRENCH, and twenty-two others, whose names stand first on the catalogue, mem- bers of the First Congregational Church in North Bridge- water, made application to be dismissed from that church, with suitable testimonials, to be organized into a separate church, to be formed on similar principles, and to adopt the same or a similar creed, with the First Church in North Bridgewater. This request was complied with, and a council was invited to organize the new church, which convened at the house of Josiah W. Kingman, on Tuesday, January 3, 1837; at which time and place the

organized church took the name of " THE SOUTH CON- GREGATIONAL CHURCH IN NORTH BRIDGEWATER."
The first house of worship was built in 1836. It was wholly consumed by fire, together with ten other build- ings, in May, 1853. The present house of worship was built in 1854, at a cost of $16,000. The spire which was one hundred and seventy-five feet high was blown down in the gale of January, 1857. The present spire is one hundred and thirty-five feet high. The building is eighty- four feet in length and fifty-six feet in width, containing ninety-four pews. In the year 1882 an addition was made to the west end of the building, to accommodate the organ and choir, which previous to that time had occupied the gallery at the east end of the church, which now gives nearly one hundred additional sittings. In 1874, Mr. Josiah W. Kingman generously gave to the society a lot of land on which to build a parsonage. During the year one was built at an outlay of $3,500.
STATEMENT OF DOCTRINE.
I. We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible ;
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who is of one substance with the Father ; by whom all things were made ;
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, who is sent from the Father and Son, and who together with the Father and Son is worshiped and glorified.
II. We believe that the Providence of God, by which He executes His eternal purposes in the government of the world, is in and over all events ; yet so that the free- dom and responsibility of man are not impaired, and sin is the act of the creature alone.
III. We believe that man was made in the image of God, that he might know, love, and obey God, and en- joy Him forever ; that our first parents by disobedience fell under the righteous condemnation of God; and that all men are so alienated from God that there is no salva- tion from the guilt and power of sin except through God's redeeming grace.
IV. We believe that God would have all men return to Him ; that to this end He has made Himself known, not only through the works of nature, the course of His
.
5
providence, and the consciences of men, but also through supernatural revelations made especially to a chosen people, and above all, when the fulness of time was come, through Jesus Christ His Son.
V. We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the record of God's revelation of Himself in the work of redemption; that they were written by men under the special guidance of the Holy Spirit ; that they are able to make wise unto salvation ; and that they constitute the authoritative standard by which religious teaching and human conduct are to be regulated and judged.
VI. We believe that the love of God to sinful men has found its highest expression in the redemptive work of His Son ; who became man, uniting His divine nature with our human nature in one person ; who was tempted like other men, yet without sin ; who, by His humilia- tion, His holy obedience, His sufferings, His death on the cross, and His resurrection, became a perfect Re- deemer ; whose sacrifice of Himself for the sins of the world declares the righteousness of God, and is the sole and sufficient ground of forgiveness and of reconciliation with Him.
VII. We believe that Jesus Christ, after He had risen from the dead, ascended into heaven, where, as the one Mediator between God and man, He carries forward His work of saving men ; that He sends the Holy Spirit to convict them of sin, and to lead them to repentance and faith ; and that those who through renewing grace turn to righteousness, and trust in Jesus Christ as their Redeemer, receive for His sake the forgiveness of their sins, and are made the children of God.
£
6
VIII. We believe that those who are thus regenerated and justified, grow in sanctified character through fellow- ship with Christ, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and obedience to the truth ; that a holy life is the fruit and evidence of saving faith ; and that the believer's hope of continuance in such a life is in the preserving grace of God.
IX. We believe that Jesus Christ came to establish among men the kindom of God, the reign of truth and love, righteousness and peace ; that to Jesus Christ, the Head of this kingdom, Christians are directly responsible in faith and conduct ; and that to Him all have immediate access without mediatorial or priestly intervention.
X. We believe that the Church of Christ, invisible and spiritual, comprises all true believers, whose duty it is to associate themselves in churches, for the maintenance of worship, for the promotion of spiritual growth and fellowship, and for the conversion of men; that these churches, under the guidance of the Holy Scriptures and in fellowship with one another, may determine - each for itself-their organization, statements of belief, and forms of worship ; may appoint and set apart their own ministers, and should co-operate in the work which Christ has committed to them for the furtherance of the gospel throughout the world.
XI. We believe in the observance of the Lord's Day, as a day of holy rest and worship; in the ministery of the Word; and in the two Sacraments which Christ has appointed for His church; Baptism, as the sign of cleansing from sin, of union to Christ, and of the impart- ation of the Holy Spirit; and the Lord's Supper as a
1

7
symbol of His atoning death, a seal of its efficacy, and a means whereby He confirms and strengthens the spiritual union and communion of belivers with Himself.
XII. We believe in the ultimate prevalence of the kingdom of Christ over all the earth ; in the glorious ap- pearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ ; in the resurrection of the dead, both of the just and un- just ; and in a final judgment. "For we must all be made manifest before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, ac- cording to what he hath done, whether it be good or bad." -II Cor. v : 10.
CONFESSION OF FAITH :
What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits toward ine? I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people. [Ps. exvi : 12-14.]
Whosoever therefore shall confess Me before men, him will I confess also before My Father, which is in heaven. But who- soever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father, which is in heaven. [Matt. x : 32, 33.]
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness: and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. [Rom. x : 10.]
Dearly beloved, called of God to be His children through Jesus Christ our Lord, you are here that, in the presence of God and His people, you may enter into the fellowship and communion of His Church. You do truly repent of your sins ; you heartily receive Jesus Christ as your crucified Saviour and risen Lord ; you consecrate yourselves unto God and your life to His service ; you accept His word as your law, and His Spirit as your
8
Comforter and Guide ; and, trusting in His grace to con- firm and strengthen you in all goodness, you promise to do God's holy will, and to walk with this church in the truth and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Accepting, according to the measure of your under- standing of it, the system of Christian truth held by the churches of our faith and order, and by this church into whose fellowship you now enter ; you join with ancient saints, with the church throughout the world, and with us, your fellow-believers, in humbly and heartily confess- ing your faith in the Gospel, saying : -
I BELIEVE in God the FATHER Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in JESUS CHRIST, His only Son, our Lord ; who was conceived by the HOLY GHOST, born of the Virgin Mary ; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried ; the third day He arose from the dead ; He ascended into heaven ; and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty ; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I be- lieve in the HOLY GHOST ; the holy Church of Christ ; the communion of saints ; the forgiveness of sins ; the res- urrection of the dead ; and the life everlasting. Amen.
Is it your desire to be baptized into this faith?
[Then should baptism be administered to those who have not been baptized.]

RECEPTION OF MEMBERS FROM OTHER CHURCHES.
Christian Friends :
In a former connection you have professed your belief in the cardinal doctrines of our faith, and sustained a visible union to the Great Head of the Church. Bearing testimonials of good standing in the Church of Christ which we receive as valid, you are now to assume similar obligations, and enter into like engagements with this church.
Do you accept the Articles of Faith, and adopt the covenant of this Church?
[The members of the Church present will now rise.]
We welcome you into our fellowship. We promise to watch over you with Christian love. God grant that, loving and being loved, serving and being served, bless- ing and being blessed, we may be prepared, while we dwell together on earth, for the perfect communion of the saints in heaven.
" Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do His will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen." [Heb. xiii : 20, 21.]

STANDING RULES.
"Let all things be done decently and in order."-I Cor. 14: 40.
I. The annual meeting of this church shall be held in the month of January, at such time as shall be de- termined by the Pastor and Deacons.
II. A meeting for prayer and conference shall be held each week, at such time as the Standing Committee shall determine. Business may be legally done at the close of any regular church meeting.
III. Special meetings may be called at any time by the Pastor, and shall be called by the Pastor or Deacons, upon the written request of five members of the church.
IV. The Deacons shall be elected by ballot, for five years ; and shall take charge of all money belonging to the church, and of all collections for benovelent objects, and shall make a full report of the same at the annual meeting.
V. At the annual meeting, reports will be expected from the Superintendent of the Sunday School, giving its work for the preceding year; from the Deacons, of the various contributions and donations received by them ; and from the Standing Committee, in reference to the general condition of the church, with a list of the absent members, and whatever else that may be of interest to the church.
11
VI. At the annual meeting, the following elections shall be made by ballot, for the ensuing year, all to serve until others be regularly chosen to fill their places : (1.) A Clerk, who shall keep the records of the church. (2.) An Auditor, who shall audit the annual reports of the Treasurers, and certify as to their correctness. (3.) A Superintendent of the Sunday School. (4.) A Standing Committee of four persons, who with the Pastor and Deacons shall constitute a committee, who shall examine candidates for admission to the church ; institute inquiries in regard to public offences and report them to the church if necessary ; in the absence of the Pastor take charge of religious meetings maintained by the church, and have an oversight of the welfare of the church. They shall also have a general superintendence of the Sunday School, and take such measures from time to time as the best interests of the Sunday School may demand.
VII. Persons approved by the Standing Committee, shall be propounded to the congregation, and not less than one week thereafter may be admitted to membership by a vote of the church, and their public assent to the con- fession of faith and covenant of this church. Those who unite with this church will be expected to give a statement of their religious experience orally, or in writing.
VIII. The ordinance of the Lord's Supper shall be observed on the first Sunday of January, March, May, July, September and November.
IX. Members of other Evangelical Churches present- ing letters of dismission, may be admitted to this church in accordance with the form prescribed for the " Recep-
12
tion of members from other Churches," after examination and approval by the Standing Committee, the acceptance of their letters by the church, and the propounding of their names to the congregation, one week at least before such admission.
X. Any member removing to another place of wor- ship is expected to ask for a letter of dismission, and to unite with the church with which they worship, within one year after their removal, and neglecting to do so, may be called to account in such manner as may be deemed expedient.
XI. All letters of dismission given by this church shall be valid for six months only from their date ; and no member who has received such a letter shall vote in business meetings of the church, except on surrender of the same.
XII. When any officer of this church shall cease statedly to worship with us, his office shall be vacated in three months from that time.
XIII. Members of this church who have habitually absented themselves from its worship and ordinances for one year, without rendering a reasonable excuse, shall by vote of the church be suspended from the privileges of the church, notice to be given them of such action, and if at the expiration of three months such habitual absence continues, a written complaint containing a specification of the charges preferred, and signed by the clerk, shall, by vote of the church, be sent to the offender citing him to appear at a given time and place, and make answer to said charges before the church.
13
XIV. Members of other Evangelical Churches are to be invited to commune with us in Christian ordinances ; but members of Congregational Churches who join us statedly in public worship, are expected to become mem- bers with us within one year. It shall be the duty of the Standing Committee, as far as may be, to become ac- quainted with such members of other churches, invite them to become members of this church, and, in case of neglect for a long time to do so, call the attention of the church to which they belong to the fact, if they think it expedient.
XV. In all cases of private offences, the rule given in the eighteenth chapter of Matthew is to be strictly ob- served, and the spirit of these rules is to be observed in all cases of public offence. If no satisfaction be given, the matter shall be laid before the church at some regular meeting. If the church deem it a duty to pursue the matter, - having found all the first steps unavailing, - a written complaint, containing a specification of the charges preferred, and signed by the clerk, shall, by vote of the church, be placed in the hands of the offender, citing him to appear at a given time and place, and make answer to said charges before the church.
XVI. Any member residing in another place for two years without taking a letter - unless sufficient reason for such neglect be known, - their names shall be placed on the retired list. This list to be kept by the clerk of the church as a separate part of the records, and to be read publicly at any time by vote of the church. When any such names shall have been upon the retired list for two years, and the persons have not given the church satis-

factory evidence of having lived a worthy Christian life, their names may, by a vote of the church, be erased from the roll of membership.
XVII. A'ny of the above rules may be annulled or changed, or new ones may be added at any regular meet- ing of the church, notice having been given at a previous meeting.
z
TEMPERANCE.
We, the members of this church, believe that making or selling intoxicating liquors to be used as a beverage is immoral, and that the use of it as a beverage is inconsist- ent with the Christian character.
