HISTORY.
In view of the rapidly increasing population in the southern portion of our city, it became the firm conviction of the friends of Congre- gationalism, that the cause of Christ could be best promoted by the organization of a church of their order, and the erection of a house of worship in that section.
Therefore, at an informal meeting held May 3d, 1872, after earnest prayer and conference, seeking divine guidance in the enterprise, it was resolved that steps be taken at once in the work.
A notice of the next meeting was given in the daily papers, inviting the co-operation of all those interested.
On coming together again, so much interest was manifested in the formation of the pro- posed new church that the site chosen for the church edifice (the corner of Main and Pied- mont streets) was subsequently purchased.
Those interested met weekly, perfecting articles of faith and covenant, and taking the necessary steps for the recognition of the church by council.
4
HISTORY.
The name of PIEDMONT CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH of Worcester, Massachusetts, was adopted, and, by vote of the church, female members were allowed the same privileges as male members in business meetings.
The difficulty of procuring a suitable tem- porary place of worship was met by the Main street Baptist people kindly offering the use of their house of worship every Sabbath after- noon, with all the privileges which a generous people could bestow.
The first public service was held in the Main street Baptist Church, June 2d, 1872. Preaching by the Rev. George W. Phillips, of the Plymouth Church of this city.
The Sabbath School, numbering one hundred and ninety, was organized after the service, by the choice of F. B. Knowles as Superintendent, and C. HI. Hutchins as assistant, with a full corps of officers and teachers.
Letters missive were addressed to several churches in this vicinity, and they were repre- sented as below :
From the Congregational Church, Holden - Rev. Wm. P. Paine, D. D., Dea. Samuel P. Hubbard; Congregational Church, Grafton - Rev. J. H. Windsor, Bro. N. K. Merriam ; Congregational Church, Leicester - Rev. A. HI. Coolidge, Bro. A. White; Old South Church, Worcester - Dea. H. H. Merriam ;

The Council organized September 18th, 1872, at the Main street Baptist Church, by the choice of Rev. Wm. P. Paine as Modera- tor, and Rev. Geo. W. Phillips as Seribe.
The preliminary steps looking to the forma- tion of the proposed new church, and the letters from sister churches recommending those persons who proposed to be organized into a church, were laid before the Council.
The Council voted that the statements and the preliminary action of the church, the con- fession of faith and covenant, submitted to the Council, were so far satisfactory that they were ready to proceed to organize the church. The Council adopted the following exercises :
1. Reading of the records of Council.
2. Anthem by the choir.
3. Invocation and reading of Scripture, by Rev. C. M. Lamson.
4. Hymn.

CONFESSION OF FAITH.
1. WE believe there is one only living and true God, who is revealed to us as the Father, Son and Holy Ghost,- the Creator, Preserver and moral Governor of the universe,- a Being of infinite power, wisdom, justice, goodness and truth; that his government is universal ; and that he does all things after the counsel of his own will.
2. We believe that the Bible was given by inspiration of God, as the only unerring rule of faith and practice.
3. We believe that mankind are fallen from a state of rectitude, and are, while in a state of nature, wholly destitute of that holiness which is required by the Divine law ; and must be regenerated and sanctified by the Holy Ghost, in order to salvation.
4. We believe that Jesus Christ was God manifest in the flesh; that by his obedience, sufferings and death, he made atonement for sin ; and that on the ground of this atonement, salvation is freely offered to all men.
5. We believe that repentance for sin, and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ are the only conditions of salvation; and that a life of obedience to God is the only appropriate evi- dence of christian discipleship.
6. We believe that the Christian Sabbath, the Church, and the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord's Supper, are of divine appoint-

ment, and the duties connected with them of perpetual obligation ; and that visible believers only have a right to the Lord's Supper, and that they and their households are the only proper subjects to whom baptism is to be administered.
7. We believe that God has appointed a day in the which He will judge the world in righteousness ; when the dead shall arise from their graves, and, together with the living, shall stand before the judgment seat of Christ and be adjudged, the righteous to everlasting life and the wicked to shame and everlasting contempt.
Do you accept these articles as in substance your own religions belief ?

COVENANT.
You do now in the presence of God and men, choose the Lord Jehovah to be your God and Father, the Lord Jesus Christ to be your only Saviour, the Holy Spirit to be your Sanctifier, Comforter and Guide. You dedi- cate yourself to God, unreservedly surrender- ing all that you have and are to his sovereign disposal; engaging by his assistance to live henceforth to him, and not yourself, and to aim, whatever you do, to do all to his glory. You do now cordially join yourself to this church of Christ, engaging a punctual and regular attendance on its worship and ordi- hances, as the providence of God shall give you opportunity. You also promise that you will submit yourself to its discipline, so far as it accords with the word of God; and to walk with the members thereof in love, watchfulness and purity. Also, to hold and promote suita- ble fellowship with all members of the sister churches of the common head, that the Lord may be one, and his name one in all branches of his church throughout all generations, to his eternal glory in Christ Jesus.
In humble reliance on divine grace, do you thus promise and engage?

15
ASSENT OF THE CHURCH.
We do therefore, as members of this branch of the church of Christ, affectionately receive you to our communion and fellowship; and on our part, engage to watch over and walk with you in love, in the ordinances of the gospel, as becometh saints; hoping that you and we shall become more and more conformed to the example of our divine Master, till we at last come to the perfection of holiness in the king- dom of his glory.
And now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,
To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. .Amen.
FORMULA FOR ADMISSION OF MEMBERS BY LETTER.
Christian Friends: You have already, in a former connection, publicly avowed your faith in the cardinal doctrines of the Gospel of Christ, and have professed Him before many witnesses as your chosen Saviour and Lord. Having closed, for providential reasons, your special relation to other organizations, and having presented to us letters which we accredit as an honorable dismission therefrom, you are now about to assume similar obliga- tions and enter into like engagements with this Christian communion. Do you accept the articles of faith and adopt the covenant of this Church ? Do you promise to sustain and submit to its fraternal discipline; to seek the

increase of its piety, unity and prosperity; to assist in the maintenance of its stated ordi- nances; and thus, according to the measure of your ability and opportunity, endeavor to fulfill the varied duties which may devolve upon you as members [or member] of this Church of Christ ?
[ The Church will here rise.]
In behalf then of this Church, I now cor- dially welcome you to its fellowship and declare you entitled to all its privileges. We earnestly invite you, so long as this mutnal relation shall continue, to share our common duties, burdens, hopes and joys as a professing Church of the crucified Saviour; and in so doing, on our part we affectionately pledge you the right hand of our fraternal confidence and sympathy.
And now unto him who is able to do exceed- ing abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus, throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
