ESTABLISHMENT
OF THE
ELIOT CHURCH.
DURING the summer of 1833, the formation of an Evangelical Congregational Church in Roxbury was contemplated. On the evening of Nov. 20, a few gentlemen from Roxbury, met a number of gentlemen, members of the Evangelical Congregational churches of Boston, at the Cowper Committee Room, to adopt measures for aiding the friends of religion in Roxbury, in the erection of a house for public worship.
After prayer and deliberation, it was unanimously resolved to proceed to the selection and purchase of a lot of land, and to erect a house as soon as circum- stances should render it advisable. The general superintendence of the enterprise was intrusted to a committee of five.
Immediate measures were taken to accomplish this resolve, and lectures were established Sunday and Thursday evenings, which were sustained by the neighboring evangelical clergymen.
At a meeting held at the Old South Chapel, on the evening of May 1-4, 1834, a subscription paper was
4
opened to raise twelve thousand dollars for the erec- tion of the house of worship.
The evening lectures in Roxbury were attended by a small but continually increasing number ; and on the 2d of September it was thought expedient to issue letters missive to call a council to organize the church.
On the 18th of September, 1834, the council con- vened, and the Eliot Church, consisting of fifty-one members, was organized. Of these, forty-five were united by recommendation from other churches, and six were received by profession. At the same time, the Rev. Jacob Abbott, who had for several months been the officiating minister, was ordained as an evan- gelist, with a view to exercise the pastoral office till a permanent pastor could be elected.
On the 6th of November, 1834, Mr. William G. Lambert and Mr. Alvah Kittredge, were elected deacons ; and on the 4th of January, 1835, they were inducted into the sacred office.
A call was given by the church, the 3d of April, 1835, to the Rev. William M. Rogers, of Townsend, to become their pastor, which call was answered in the negative.
On the 10th of August, 1835, a call was extended by the church, to the Rev. John S. C. Abbott, to settle over them as their pastor. To the call an affirmative answer was returned, and the 25th of No- vember 1835, the council was convened, which dedi- cated the new meeting-house to God, and installed Mr. Abbott as pastor of the Eliot Church.
ARTICLES OF FAITH AND COVENANT.
INTRODUCTORY ADDRESS.
BELOVED FRIENDS,
You have presented yourselves before God and his people, and the world, to make a solemn profession of your religious faith, and to enter into covenant with God and with this church. We trust you have duly considered the nature of this transac- tion. Having examined the articles of faith, you will now assent to the same.
CONFESSION OF FAITH.
1. We acknowledge and trust in Jehovah, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, as our God, our Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier ; and we be- lieve that these three are one, infinite in power and goodness, and equal in all divine attributes.
2. We receive the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, as given by inspiration of God, and as the perfect rule of our faith and practice.
*
6
3. We believe that mankind are fallen from the state of holiness in which our first parents were crea- ted ; and that we, in common with all their posterity, are by nature destitute of holiness, and sinners against God.
4. We trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, as the only Saviour of sinners, who took upon him our nature, and suffered for the sins of the world, that God might be just, and the justifier of him that believeth; and we believe that through him, eternal life is freely offered to all, on condition of repentance and faith.
5. We believe that no man ever complies with the conditions of salvation, without the special influences of the Holy Spirit ; and we hope for salvation only through the grace of God, bestowed upon us for the sake of the Redeemer.
6. We believe in the superintending providence and government of God, and that he directs all things according to the councils of his own will.
7. We acknowledge all who love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity, as our brethren of the church univer- sal ; but we believe that the disciples of Christ in every place, who agree in doctrine and discipline, are bound to unite in particular churches in which baptism and the Lord's Supper shall be administered in his name ; that none but members of the visible church have a right to partake of the Lord's Supper, and that only they, and their households, are proper subjects of baptism.
8. We believe that there will be a general resur- rection of the dead, when Jesus Christ shall judge the
7
world in righteousness, and that the wicked shall go into everlasting punishment, and the righteous into life eternal.
All these things you profess and believe.
You will now enter into solemn covenant with God and with this church.
THE COVENANT.
You do solemnly and publicly avouch the Lord Jehovah to be your God, your Redeemer and Sanc- tifier ; you do cheerfully devote yourselves to him in an everlasting covenant ; consecrating all your powers and faculties to his service and glory ; and you pro- mise that through the assistance of his Spirit, you will cleave to him as your chief good ; that you will give diligent attendance on his word and ordinances ; that you will seek the honor and interests of his kingdom, and that henceforth, denying all ungodliness and every worldly lust, you will live soberly, righteously and godly in the world.
You do also now cordially join yourselves to this church, and engage to submit to its government and discipline; to strive earnestly for its peace, edification and purity, and to walk with its members in charity, faithfulness, circumspection, meekness, and sobriety. Thus you covenant and engage.
[The ordinance of baptism will here be administered.]
In consequence of these professions and promises, we, the members of this church, [here the members of the church will rise,] affectionately receive you to
8
our communion, and in the name of Christ declare you entitled to all its visible privileges ; we welcome you to its fellowship with us in the blessings of the Gospel, and on our part engage to watch over you, and seek your edification as long as you shall continue with us. And now, beloved in the Lord, let it never be forgotten that you here come under solemn obli- gations from which you cannot escape ; you can never withdraw from the communion of Christians ; wher- ever you go these vows will be upon you ; they will follow you to the bar of God, and will abide upon you forever.
The Lord guide and preserve you till death, and at last receive you and us to that blessed world, where our love and joy shall be forever perfect. Amen.

FORM OF ADMISSION.
ADDRESS.
BELOVED FRIENDS :
You have presented yourselves, in this public manner, to make a profession of your religious faith, and to enter into covenant with God and with this church. God, angels, and this assembly, are witnesses to the transaction. The profession which you now make, and the engagements into which you now enter, are of the most solemn moment ; they will be heard on high ; and will be exhibited on your trial at the last day.
The following you acknowledge as your
CONFESSION OF FAITH.
1. You believe there is but one God, who is infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, and possessed of all possible perfections.
2. You believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and are the perfect rule of our faith and practice.
3. You believe that God is revealed in the Scriptures as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost ; that these three are the one God, and in all the divine attributes are equal.
6
4. You believe that the purposes of God are eternal and immutable ; that he created all things for his own glory ; and that his providence and government are universal, wise and holy.
5. You believe that man was created holy ; that he fell from that state by sinning against God ; that in consequence of the fall, mankind are by nature desti- tute of holiness, and sinners against God.
6. You believe that Jesus Christ is both God and man ; that by his sufferings and death he made an atonement sufficient for all ; and that through him, salvation is freely offered to all, on condition of repent- ance and faith.
7. You believe that all who truly repent and believe in Christ were chosen in him before the foundation of the world ; that they are regenerated by the special influence of the Holy Spirit ; that they are justified on account of Christ's righteousness, and will be kept by the mighty power of God through faith unto salva- tion.
8. You believe that in this world the. Lord Jesus Christ has a visible Church, the terms of admission to which are a public profession of faith in Christ, sustained by credible evidence ; that the only sacra- ments of the New Testament are Baptism and the Lord's Supper ; that Baptism is to be administered to covenanting believers and their households, and the Lord's Supper to members of the Church in regular standing.
9. You believe that there will be a general resurrec- tion of the dead, when Jesus Christ shall judge the world in righteousness ; and that the wicked shall go
7
into everlasting punishment, and the righteous into life eternal.
All these things you heartily profess and believe.
You will now enter into covenant with God and with this Church.
COVENANT.
In the presence of God, his holy angels and this assembly, you do now solemnly avow the Lord Jehovah to be your God, and your portion forever. You do solemnly dedicate yourselves to God the Father as your chief good, to the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and to the Holy Spirit as your Sanctifier. You do solemnly devote to the one living and true God, all your faculties, powers, and possessions ; covenanting that you will be the Lord's forever ; en- gaging that, through the aid of his Spirit, you will love him supremely and obey him faithfully ; that you will give diligent attendance to his word and ordi- nances ; that you will seek above all things the honor and interests of his kingdom ; and that you will aim, without ceasing, to adorn your profession by a blame- less life, and by holiness of heart.
You do also now cordially join yourselves to this Church of Christ, and engage to submit to the regular administration of its government and discipline ; to strive earnestly for its peace, edification, and purity ; and to walk with its members in the gospel order and fellowship.
Trusting in the grace of God, you thus covenant and engage.
8
[The ordinance of Baptism will here be administered.]
In consequence of these professions and engage- ments, we, the members of this Church, affectionately receive you to our communion, and in the name of Christ declare you entitled to all its visible privileges ; we welcome you to the fellowship with us in the blessing's of the Gospel, and on our part engage to watch over you, and seek your edification, so long as our circumstances may permit, and your necessities may require.
And now, beloved in the Lord, let it never be for- gotten that you have here come under obligations from which you cannot escape ; you can never withdraw from the covenant which has now been confirmed ; wherever you go, these vows will be upon you ; they will follow you to the bar of God, and will abide upon you forever.
Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work, to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ ; to whom be glory for ever. AMEN.
