HISTORICAL NOTE.

THE Plantation of Succanesset was settled in the year 1660, by the following persons, with their families, from Scituate and Barnstable, viz.

JONATHAN HATCH.

THOMAS LATHROP.

ISAAC ROBINSON.

PETER BLOSSOM.

JOHN CHAPMAN.

WILLIAM NELSON.

JOIN JENKINS.

ANTHONY ANNABLE.

JAMES HAMLIN.

JAMES COBB.

MR. THOMAS.

THOMAS EWER.

SAMUEL FULLER.

SAMUEL HINCKLEY.

In the year 16S6, the plantation was incorporated by the name of Falmouth.

The following extracts are the earliest records provid- ing for the support of the gospel in this place.

June 6, 1687. " We, the inhabitants of Succanesset, being desirous to uphold and to our ability to maintain the public preaching of the word of God amongst us, but considering the smallness of our people, do therefore think it to be necessary for us to provide and set apart some lands and meadow or marsh, which may be a help and encouragement to any fit person that is or may be helpful to us or our posterity after us in that good work, do therefore firmly agree that a Twenty Acre Lot, and Ten acres of land and the marsh or meadow about the Bass Pond, which were set apart the 23d July, 1677,- and Forty acres of upland in the Twenty Acre Lots, and half a share of marsh or meadow laying at Great Sippi- wisset, and a Dwelling House and about two acres of

4

upland adjoining to it, shall be and remain forever to be improved for the help and encouragement of any fit per- son that doth or may be employed in teaching the good word of God amongst us or our posterity after us, and to be perpetually to such an end successively without any alteration or change forever." " Voted the 6th day of June, 1687."

" The 6th day of August, 1791, the town of Falmouth assembled together, and it was then voted by said town, and agreed to, that we should look out abroad for a suita- ble and fit person to preach the word of God in this town to us ; and to keep school for the good of our children.

" On the 10th day of December, 1701, the town being orderly assembled together, it was voted that Mr. Shiv- erick was now of the town, minister.

" On the 20th November, 1702, it was ordered and agreed to that a rate of fifteen pounds should be made upon the inhabitants of the town for Mr. Shiverick."

The 3d day of February, 1703, the inhabitants of Fal- mouth met together and did agree, that they would not employ Samuel Shiverick any more to preach to them, and chose Thomas Bowman and Joseph Parker to reckon with him for what he has done last summer and this winter.

On the 22d February, 1704, the inhabitants of Fal- mouth chose John Robinson and Phillip Dexter to be their agents, who were authorized, " on consultation with Rev. Jonathan Russel of Barnstable, and Rev. Rowland Cotton of Sandwich, to obtain a suitable person to be the minister of this place to preach the gospel among us."

On the 15th October, 1704, the inhabitants raised " twenty pounds per year and suitable entertainment for the encouragement of such person as shall be established in the ministry."

At a meeting holden at Falmouth, by the ratable inhab-

5

itants thereof, on the 19th day of May, 1707, regularly assembled, the Rev. Mr. Joseph Metcalf, with the advice of the Rev. Jonathan Russel, Rev. Rowland Cotton and Rev. Nathaniel Stone, Pastors of churches, was chosen the minister of this town.

The Church is supposed to have been organized in the latter part of the year 170S, about twenty persons at that time residing in Falmouth, receiving letters of dismission from the Church in Barnstable for organization into a Church of Christ.

No records of the Church can be found previous to the ordination of Rev. Mr. Palmer, in 1731.

CONFESSION OF FAITH.

You believe in one only living and true God1- Father, Son, and Holy Ghost ;2 a self-existent3 and unchangeable4 spirit,5 infinite in wisdom,6 power,7 and goodness ;8 whom all intelligent creatures ought to revere and worship as the Maker, Pre- server, and Governor of the Universe.9

2 Matt. xxviii. 19. 2 Cor. xiii. 14. Isa. vi. 1, 5. Heb. ix. 14.

3 I AM THAT I AM, Ex. iii. 14.

8 Ps. cxix. 68. God is love, 1 John iv. 8.

9 Rev. iv. 11. 1. Chron. xvi. 29.

You believe that the foreknowledge of God extended to all events which should ever come to pass ;1 that his purposes are inseparable from his foreknowledge, and therefore necessarily eternal and immutable ;2 that he made all things for him- self,3 and governs all according to the counsels of his own will ;4 and that the principles and adminis- tration of his government are perfectly holy, just, and good.5

1 Acts xv. 18.

2 Isa. xlvi. 9, 10. Eph. iii. 11.

3 Prov. xvi. 4. Rev. iv. 11.

4 Eph. i. 11. Isa. xlvi. 10.

$ Ps. cxlv. 17. Isa. xxviii. 29.

7

You believe that man is a free moral agent, and fit subject for rewards and punishments ;1 and that his chief end is, to glorify God and enjoy him for- ever.2

1 Deut. xxx. 19. Matt. xvi. 27.

2 Deut. xxxiii. 27. Ps. xxxiv. 8.

You believe that the holiness of creatures con- sists in loving God supremely for his inherent excel- lence, and in loving others as themselves.

Matt. xxii. 37, 40. 1 Cor. xiii. 1, 8.

You believe that our first parents were created holy ;1 that they fell from that state of holiness by transgressing the divine command ;2 and that, in consequence of this apostacy,3 all their descendants are by nature without holiness, being alienated from God and under the curse of a violated law, until their hearts are renewed by divine grace. 4

1 Ecc. vii. 29. Gen. i. 26, 27. 2 Gen. ii. 17. Gen. iii. 1, 24.

Rom. v. 19. + Rom. iii. 10-12. Jer. xvii. 9.

You believe that Christ, being both human and divine, and having these two natures in one per- son,1 has become a Mediator between God and Man ;2 that he suffered and died upon the cross, arose from the dead, and ascended into heaven, where he ever lives to intercede ;3 that he alone has made an atonement for sin ;4 and that, in con- sequence of this atonement, pardon is offered to all who hear the gospel, on condition of repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ.5

4 1 Pet. ii. 21. Heb. ii. 9.

5 John iii. 16. Luke xxiv. 47.

8

You believe that it is the duty of all who hear, immediately to embrace the kind offer ;1 and that nothing, aside from their own disposition, debars any from a full participation in the benefits of re- deeming love ;2 but that such is man's aversion to the terms on which salvation is proposed, that, when left to their own natural choice, all refuse to comply with them.3

1 Acts xvii. 30. Ezek. xviii. 30, 32.

2 Rev. xxii. 17. Isa. lv. 1, 7. 3 John v. 40. John i. 11.

You believe that some are influenced to accept,I having their election of God through sanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth, inclining them to holy obedience ;2 and that, being once made par- takers of the regenerating grace of the Holy Ghost, they will certainly attain unto final and complete salvation.3

1 Ps. cx. 3. 2 Eph. i. 4. Rom. xi. 5, 7.

3 1 Peter i. 5. Phil. i. 6.

You believe that there will be a general resurrec- tion of the bodies, both of the just and the unjust ;1 and a day of judgment,2 when the Lord Jesus Christ will pass sentence upon all mankind, according to - the deeds done in the body ;3 and when the wicked shall go away into everlasting punishment,4 but the righteous into life eternal.5

1 John v. 28, 29. 2 Acts xvii. 31. 3 2 Cor. v. 10.

4 2 Thess. i. 7-9. Matt. xxv. 41, 46.

5 Matt. xxv. 35, 46.

You believe that Christ has a visible church on the earth ;1 that the terms of membership are,-a credible profession of faith in him as the only Saviour of sinners, and of subjection to him as the rightful King of saints ;2 and that the power to cut

9

off those who walk disorderly is of divine appoint- ment.3

1 Acts xx. 28. 2 Tim. ii. 19. 2 Acts ii. 41, 47. 2 Cor. ix. 13.

3 Matt. xviii. 15-17. 1 Cor. v. 11-13.

You believe that Baptism and the Lord's Supper are sacraments of the New Testament, to be ob- served to the end of time ;1 that none but members of the visible church, in regular standing, have a right to partake of the latter ;2 and that only they3 and their households4 can be admitted to the former.

Matt. xxviii. 19, 20. Isa. lii. 15.

2 1 Cor. x. 21. Ex. xii. 48.

3 Acts viii. 36, 37. 4 Gen. xvii. 7. Rom. iv. 11.

You believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are the inspired word of God ;1 that they contain a complete and harmonious sys- tem of divine truth,2 and are the only perfect rule of Christian faith and practice.3

1 2 Tim. iii. 16. 2 Peter i. 21.

2 2 Tim. iii. 16, 17. Rom. xv. 3.

3 2 Peter i. 19. Gal. i. S.

This you sincerely profess and believe.

COVENANT.

In the presence of God, his holy angels, and this assembly, you avouch the Lord Jehovah-Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, to be your God ; the object of your supreme affection, and your portion forever ; choosing God the Father for your Father and Jus- tifier, God the Son for your Redeemer and Inter- cessor, and God the Holy Ghost for your Sanctifier and Comforter.

10

To this glorious Being, in the everlasting cove- nant of his grace, you dedicate both soul and body ; humbly confessing and repenting of your sins ; and promising that, through the assistance of his Spirit, you will henceforth cleave to him as your chief good ; that you will give diligent attention to his word and ordinances ; that you will seek the honor and prosperity of his kingdom ; and that, denying all ungodliness and every worldly lust, you will live soberly, righteously, and godly in the world.

In uniting with this Church, you acknowledge it to be a true Church of Christ, cordially engaging to submit to all the Scriptural rules of its government and discipline ; to strive earnestly for its peace, pu- rity and enlargement ; and to walk with its mem- bers in brotherly love, faithfulness, circumspection, meekness and sobriety.

This you solemnly covenant and promise.

In consequence of these professions and engage- ments, we, the members of this Church, affection- ately receive you to our communion ; and, in the - name of Christ, declare you entitled to all its privi- leges ; engaging, by divine assistance on our part, to watch over you with Christian kindness ; and to seek your edification and comfort, as long as you shall continue with us. May the Lord guide and preserve you till death ; and at last receive you and us to that blessed world, where our love and joy shall be forever perfect, through the exceeding riches of divine grace in Christ Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. AMEN.
