BROOKLINE.

Should this town be re-annexed to Boston, I hope its identity and history will still be preserved.

The act of incorporation of Brookline as a separate town, was passed in 1705, and signed by the Governor General, Joseph Dudley, on the 13th day of November. This Gov. Dudley was a younger son of the staunch old Puritan Thomas Dudley, my honored grandfather of the 7th ascent, if the ex- pression may be allowed. And it is very interesting to note that Hon. Robert C. Winthrop, who has recently, on 22nd Feb. last, given us a labored and excellent account of this town's progress from the start, is a grandson of the fifth de- scent from this Governor, who thus helped to constitute Brook- line an independent municipality. Samuel Sewall, Jr., one of the most prominent citizens at the date just mentioned, was also a relative of Gov. Joseph Dudley, having married his daughter Rebecca.

After the town was incorporated, the inhabitants built a meeting house in 1714 ; for they had previously worshipped at Roxbury, five miles away. The settlement was now about seventy years old.

The first Representative to the Legislature was John Win- chester, in 1709. At this time there were less than fifty vo- ters in the town. But now it contains about 7000 inhabi- tants, and 1100 voters.

In the " trying times" of the Revolutionary war, Brookline was patriotic, and she passed strong resolutions in anticipation of the great struggle, not fearing its advent, nor doubting its triumphant termination.

In the last war with England some of Brookline's best blood was shed; - and, in the great war for the Union, this town is said to have furnished 34 commissioned officers, and 720 men, - many more than were demanded.

The ladies of Brookline raised more than $20,000 to be used for the comfort of the soldiers, and the town expended from its own treasury nearly $135,000 on account of the war ; besides over $30,000 subscribed for the organization and equipment of the volunteers.

BROOKLINE.

It is understood that the names of Wilder Dwight, and his compeers, who fell in the late war, are to be inscribed on tablets and placed in the elegant Town Hall, recently erected.

Mr. Winthrop, in his splendid address, draws many fine, life-like pictures, of the interesting characters and objects, that have adorned the past history of this beautiful town. He says he, himself, has resided here but seven years, but many of the most distinguished citizens have been his friends, and he feels deeply interested in their lives. Among the noted citizens, or summer residents were Higginson, Cabot, John C, Warren, Richard Sullivan, William Appleton, John Eliot Thayer, Benjamin Guild, Theodore Lyman, Nathaniel 1. Bow- ditch, Samuel G. Perkins, Thomas H. Perkins, &c.

One excellent recommendation, in the address of Mr. Winthrop, is that names should be given to new streets, schools, &c., to commemorate the distinguished men who have lived and labored in the town.

According to the Reports of the Selectmen, Treasurer &c. dated February 1st, 1873, the number of polls assessed is, 1586, at $2 each, total valuation of property, $29,413,914. Amount voted by the town for general purposes, $318,830. The town employs a Superintendent of the Public Schools, at a salary of $1500. The appropriation for education is $35,000.

The Public Library contains 14,723 bound volumes, and 870 pamphlets.

The appropriation for building the new Town Hall was $150,000. It has been finished, and was dedicated with im- posing ceremonies on Washington's birth day of the present year.
