Equitable Life Assurance SOCIETY, X

22 Equitable Building,

D. W. RUSSELL, Manager. BOSTON.

BOSTON, SEPTEMBER 1, 1881.

D. W. RUSSELL, formerly connected with the NEW YORK LIFE IN- SURANCE COMPANY, has received and accepted the appointment of Man- ager of the EQUITABLE LIFE ASSURANCE SOCIETY, of NEW YORK, for the Metropolitan District of Boston and vicinity.

In making this announcement, MR. RUSSELL desires to call tlie atten- tion of his friends and the public generally to one or two important facts in connection with the Policies issued by the EQUITABLE, which ought to commend them to popular favor.

Since July, 1879, all policies upon which three annual premiums have been paid are incontestable by their terms, thus doing away with any pos- sible litigation in consequence of errors in application, &c.

All such incontestable policies will be paid at maturity, without rebate of interest, IMMEDIATELY after the receipt at the Society's Office, in New York, of satisfactory proof of death, together with a valid and satisfactory discharge from the parties in interest, and without requiring any delay, even for sixty or ninety days, as has been the custom heretofore, and is still usual with other companies.

The advantage of this feature will be readily apparent, for upon the death of the protective head, the family usually require the proceeds of a Policy at once.

Tontine Savings Fund Policies, originally introduced and adopted by this Society, afford Insurance at the ordinary life rate, and become a modified form of endowment, payable to the holder of the policy, if alive, after ten, fifteen, or twenty years.

Instances are shown where the entire premiums paid, have been re- turned after an interval of ten years. When the longer periods are se- lected, this amount returned is considerably in excess of the entire premiums paid, thus making an ordinary Life Policy a good investment. When the higher rate policies, such as fifteen or twenty year endowment, are selected, the accumulation is still greater.

The Society was chartered and commenced business in 1859, and on the 1st day of January, 1881, beside paying all its losses and expenses, liad accumulated and securely invested under the laws of the State of New York, upward of Forty-one Millions of Dollars, on which the labilities, in- cluding legal reserves, were $32,000,000.00, leaving a surplus of over $9,000,000.00.

Statistics show that during the last ten years less than one per cent of the premiums paid for Life Insurance in the United States has been lost through the failure of companies, a result not attained by any other form of Trust Institutions, so that one may feel safer with investments of this character than any other.

MR. RUSSELL will be pleased to meet any of lis old friends at his office, No. 22 Equitable Building, or will courteously respond to any written inquiries.

PREFACE.

Two years have passed since our last issue, and we present No. 7 of the BROOKLINE DIRECTORY to our patrons and the public.

That Brookline is enjoying an era of prosperity can be seen by the following figures taken from the Assessors' work for the current year ;

Real Estate. $13,826,400

Personal Estate

9,896,900

$23,723,300

Rate of Taxation $10.80 per M.

The number of polls assessed is 2,052-an increase over last year of 89; number of houses, 1,208-an increase of 18; number of horses, 738-an increase of 24; number of cows, 385-an in- crease of 31. The number of acres of land is 3,765. The rate of taxation is considerably lower than at any time since 1872.

Below is given a comparative table showing the valuation and rate for three years :

1879

Real Estate. $13,478,100

Personal 9,015,700

Rate.

12.60

1880 $13,608,400 9,261,300 12.00

1881 $13,826,400 9,896,900 10.80

The above shows an increase of $218,000, on real estate, and $635,600 on personal property-making a total increase of valua- tion this year of $853,600.

Our canvass shows an increase of names over that of last year, as will be seen by the figures given below :

Names in 1881-1882 .2,749

Names in 1879-1880. 2,678

Increase over last edition. 71

We wish especially to call the attention of persons using the directory, to the importance of knowing the precise spelling of a name, before looking for it, as names pronounced the same, but spelled in various ways, will sometimes appear on different pages, and at quite a distance from each other.

Our agents have received the usual courteous attention from all with whom they have come in contact, while obtaining the information for this number, and with many thanks for the same, We remain very respectfully,

W. A. GREENOUGH & CO.,
