PREFACE.
WE take pleasure in presenting herewith, this edition of the BROOKLINE DIRECTORY, for 1887. We have availed ourselves of every facility within our reach to ensure the utmost accuracy and completeness, and we believe that our efforts in this direction will be appreciated.
We shall be disappointed if the present edition, does not prove to be superior to any of its predecessors.
We take this occasion to offer our congratulations to the citizens of Brookline on the brilliant prospects of the future growth of their beautiful town, which must infalli- bly result from the Beacon street extension, no better evi- dence of their enterprise and sagacious foresight could be offered than the unanimity and enthusiasm with which they endorsed the proposed movement, and voted the nec- essary appropriations therefor.
We would call especial attention to a new map made expressly for this work by C. D. Elliot, civil engineer, of Somerville, who has had long experience in this direction.
The fact that no fixed rules govern the spelling or pro- nunciation of proper names, hence in looking for a par- ticular name, one must know how the person spells and pronounces it, the observance of this rule will prevent some perplexity and unjust criticism.
Americans visiting Europe, will find our different Direc- tories on file at Messrs. Henry F. Gillig & Co.'s, Ameri- can Exchange and Reading Room, 449 Strand, Charing Cross, London, W. C., and at 35 Boulevard des Capu- cines, Paris.
The following synopsis. shows the increase of names over the last edition :
Names in 1887 3,524
1885 3409-69 died, equals 3,340
Increase . 184
Our usual thanks are extended to any and all who have assisted our agents while canvassing for the present num- ber. Respectfully,
W. A. GREENOUGH & CO.,
Editors, Printers and Publishers.
