PREFACE.

In presenting to our patrons and the general public this eighteenth edition of the BROOKLINE DIRECTORY, we would express the hope that it may meet every reasonable expec- tation. It is scarcely necessary to state that the difficulties and expense attending the compilation of such a work are very great, and not to be appreciated by any one unfamiliar with the business, like every other is peculiar to itself.|

Since 1862 we have made a specialty of compiling city di- rectories and it has been our sincere purpose and ernest en- deavor to do our work faithfully, and in return, may we not ask the generous support of an undivided community ? We call special attention to advertisers who have favored us in this edition and bespeak for them a liberal patronage,

Respectfully,

W. A. GREENOUGH & CO.
