The First Book of

Chelmsford Jown Records

Copied from the original. under vote of the town, march 21, 1892.

This book is copied literally from the First and Second books of Town Records. and the entire work has been carefully verified. Where a word or part of a sentence is illegible, or wanting, the discrepan. is indicated by brackets; these are filled out where the missing text could be supplied from the transcript of 1/42, or from any other source? The numbers in parenthesis indicate the corresponding page in the original:

Of the First book one of covers and considerable of the book were found to be missing. Five loose leaves and the first fourteen pages without page numbers, are mainly records of land grants. The leaves from these to page 100,- which contains the record of the town meeting of 1670,- are missing. In this missing part were doubtless the records of the first town meetings, as there are in the transcript of 1742, (BOOKA) The pages from 159 to 171, from 190 to 200, and from 205 to 210 are also missing.

This loss is the more to be regretted as in the transcript of 1/42 it appears that only such records were copied as the committee deemed important. Their transcript consisted of but 5% pages, exclusive of the vital statistics, 26 of which are before 1610. while it has required 156 to contain what is now found in the original first book (exclusive of births marriages and deaths.)

In the record of births, marriages and deaths, in the first book, no entries are found in the old transcript not now found in the original, and there are many more which are mostly incomplete and were evidently omitted from that transcript for that reason or because They could not be deciphered. A statement which ofyears at the end of the record of deaths in the transcript of 1742, shows the condition of the first look at that time. It reads as follows: Chelmsford December the: 28# 174. It is hereby Certified that the First Book of Records in the sol Town in many places was torn and Defaced and in other places the Births and Deaths wholly Lost

and in some places the month or year missing that all Could not be perfectly Transcribed but they have been all Carefully examined and Transcribed into this Book according as they appeared in the ed first 13,00 Kr. for Being: Adams Town Clerk" In the second book, the covers and the greater part of the book are missing. It has required but 54 pages, (exclusive of index and vital statistics) to contain what was found, while the transcript of 1743 has 223 pages covering the same. The second book consists principally of records of land grants and highways. Of the record of birth . marriages, and death's, in the second book, all that were found in the transcript have been copied as well as those in the original. 20 pages of births , 2 1/2 pages of marriages, and all of the deaths are from that transcript.
