THE UNIVERSALIST GENERAL CONVENTION.

INTRODUCTORY.

THE need of a uniform system of keeping Parish and Church records has been felt for a long time in the Universalist communion. Records have been kept in various forms, and with more or less com- pleteness, but there has been no regular approved system of registry. The Record Books furnished by other bodies have not been altogether adapted to the requirements of our Church, and the desire has been expressed by many who are deeply interested in preserving and tracing its work, that an effort should be made to supply an acknowledged need. The General Convention has therefore caused this Book of Record to be prepared, in the hope that it may be found at least measurably well adapted for the purpose designed. The book does not include all particulars that some perhaps would like to place on record. The aim has been to designate the more important matters, and to provide for their enumeration in a form convenient and not liable to be misunderstood. By arrangements with the Universalist Pub- lishing House, this Record will be supplied at little more than actual cost, the Convention having guaranteed that the expense of publication shall be met. It is hoped that our Parishes and Churches will generally purchase the book, and follow its system of registry. If this is done, it will be easier than now to obtain accurate returns, and to institute comparisons as to our denominational growth and condition.

It will be seen that provision is made for recording the Names of Pastors, Deacons, Sunday- school Superintendents, Persons holding important Offices in the Parish or Church, and Delegates to Conventions. A further provision is made for the record of Baptisms, Marriages, and Deaths; for Amounts annually given for Benevolent and Church Work; there is also furnished a form for keeping a list of Church Members, and likewise a Registry of Families in the Parish. If entries are carefully made, under these heads, we shall certainly gain in an understanding of our condition and work.

SUGGESTIONS.

I. This book is intended as a permanent record, that will steadily increase in value with the lapse of time. It should therefore be kept with the greatest neatness and accuracy.

2. It would be well not only to make the lists of Pastors and Deacons complete, but also to enter all the particulars for which place is provided.

3. It seems desirable that occasionally the "Register of Families" should be printed - giving the names, and the dates of joining the congregation - for the use of the people. This would be found to promote the acquaintance and mutual interest which is so beneficial and so agreeable.

4. In the Index, the names of all persons may be entered, with reference to the pages where such names may be found.

THIS Record is intended for preservation in the Parish, and in case of the removal of the Pastor, should be left by him with the Clerk, to be placed in custody of the Clergyman succeeding.
