HISTORICAL.

On March 18, 1657, within three years of the settle- ment of Northampton, the people in town meeting voted to take steps towards securing a minister. On June 7, 1658, Rev. Eleazer Mather, son of Rev. Richard Mather, of Dorchester, and brother of Increase Mather, having been approved by the General Court, was called to preach. The Church was organized and Mr. Mather installed June 18, 1661. A second, assistant minister was voted in December, 1662, and for several years Rev. Joseph Eliot, son of Rev. John Eliot, "the Apostle to the In- dians," served in that capacity, but was not installed. Mr. Mather was a member of the synod which adopted the Half-Way Covenant, to which he was himself opposed. He died July 24, 1669, at the age of 32. The inscrip- tion on his memorial in the Bridge Street Cemetery, written by Cotton Mather, his nephew, extols his piety and zeal. Seventy-one names are recorded as members of the church during his ministry.

About three months after Mr. Mather's death, the town invited Rev. Solomon Stoddard, of Boston, just returned from a chaplaincy in the Barbadoes, to preach on trial. He came to Northampton in 1670, was in- stalled September 11, 1672, and died February 11, 1729, at the age of 86, after a ministry here of nearly fifty-

6

eight years. He was a graduate and fellow of Har- vard College, and for seven years its first librarian. He took a prominent part in the ecclesiastical affairs of the province, suggested the establishment of a national church, contending that the individual churches should be accountable to some controlling authority, and ex- tended the principle of the Half-Way Covenant, which the church had already adopted, in the system which bears his name, vindicating in controversy with the Mathers, its principal opponents, "the right of visible saints to the Lord's Supper, though they be destitute of a saving work of God's Spirit in their hearts." Besides the controversial writings on this subject, he published many sermons, one being the Annual Election Sermon before the Legislature (1703). During his ministry there were four revivals and six hundred and thirty persons were admitted to the church.

Some years before Mr. Stoddard's death, Rev. Isaac Chauncey, of Hadley, had been engaged as a temporary assistant. In 1726 Rev. Jonathan Edwards, then a tutor in Yale College, where he graduated in 1720, was invit- ed to become the colleague of Mr. Stoddard, his grand- father. He was installed February 11, 1727, and dis- missed June 22, 1750. During the twenty-three years of his ministry here five hundred and fifty persons were enrolled as members of the church. Two notable re- vivals were stimulated by his preaching, one in 1734-35, which, beginning in Northampton, extended to the neighboring colonies and beyond, and one in 1740-42, part of the movement known as the Great Awakening. Mr. Edwards wrote the history of the first, and was a

recognized leader and the chief literary apologist of the second. Besides his writings on the revivals, he also published while minister in Northampton a number of sermons, a treatise on the Religious Affections and a work on the Qualifications for Full Communion ; here too he wrote his memoir of David Brainerd, the mis- sionary, who died in his house in 1747. The immediate occasion of his dismissal was a controversy growing out of his opposition to the views and practices established in the church by Mr. Stoddard, and accepted at the time by nearly all the churches in the county, concern- ing admission to the Lord's Supper ; Mr. Edwards re- quired from the candidate, as is now the custom, a credible profession of faith and godliness. After leaving Northampton he went as pastor of the village church and missionary to the Indians to Stockbridge, where (1751-58) he wrote the treatises on which rest his endur- ing fame as a theologian. He was installed President of New Jersey College at Princeton February 16, 1758, and died there of small-pox on the 22nd of the follow- ing month. The memorial tablet in this church was erected June 22, 1900, the one hundred and fiftieth an- niversary of his dismissal.

For three years the church was without a pastor. Rev. John Hooker, the fourth minister, great grandson of Thomas Hooker, "the father of the Connecticut churches", was ordained December 5, 1753. He was a graduate of Yale, preached here for twenty-three years and died of small-pox February 6, 1777. He was an ardent patriot at the time of the Revolution. While not achieving the commanding position of his predeces-

8

sors, he succeeded by his ability as a preacher, his gen- tle deportment and sound discretion in uniting a divided people and in winning and retaining their affections. His monument in the Bridge Street cemetery was their tribute to his memory. Some four hundred members were added to the church during his ministry.

Since the close of the Colonial period the church has had ten ministers of whom, down to the present, only one has continued in office till death. This was Rev. Solomon Williams, called from a tutorship at Yale and ordained as Mr. Hooker's successor in 1778. His offi- cial connection with the church extended over fifty-six years. He died at the age of 82, November 9, 1834. For three years, 1817-20, he was assisted by a relative, Rev. Samuel P. Williams. Rev. Mark Tucker was in- stalled as colleague pastor in 1824 and dismissed in 1827; Rev. Ichabod S. Spencer was pastor from 1828 to 1832, and Rev. Joseph Penny, a native of Ireland, from 1833 to 1835. Over fourteen hundred members were admitted during the ministry of Mr. Williams and his colleagues. After leaving Northampton Dr. Tucker preached with success in Troy, N. Y., Providence, R. I. and elsewhere, and died in Weathersfield, Conn., March 19, 1875; Dr. Spencer was pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn till his death, November 23, 1854; Dr. Penny was for four years President of Hamilton College and died in Rochester, N. Y., March 22, 1860.

Rev. Charles Wiley, ordained November 7, 1837 and dismissed February 9, 1845, afterwards filled various po- sitions as preacher and teacher. £ Rev. Eliphalet Young Swift, installed November 19, 1845 and dismissed Sep-

9

tember 22, 1851, had been pastor of a Presbyterian church in Ohio and was afterwards settled in South Hadley and Williamsburg and later in Denmark, Iowa, where he died June 15, 1892. Rev. John P. Cleave- land, D. D., installed April 20, 1853 and dismissed July 11, 1855, held many responsible positions in Detroit, Prov- idence, Lowell and other places. He died in Newbury- port March 7, 1873. He was a strong advocate of tem- perance and anti-slavery and in 1862 was for some time chaplain of the 30th Regiment of Massachusetts Volun- teers.

Rev. Zachary Eddy, D. D., was installed March 3, 1858 and dismissed April 1, 1867. Before coming to Northampton he had been a home missionary in Wis- consin and Western New York, and the pastor of two churches ; he was afterwards settled in Brooklyn, Chel- sea and Detroit. He died in Detroit November 15, 1891. Three hundred and fourteen names added to the roll of church members testify to his faithful ministry here. Besides numerous sermons and pamphlets, he published a Life of Christ (1868) and assisted in the compilation of two hymn-books ("Hymns of the Church," 1869 ; " Hymns and Songs of Praise" 1873).

Rev. William S. Leavitt, minister of the church from 1867 to 1881, related by common ancestry to his prede- cessor of a century earlier, Solomon Williams, was born in Vermont in 1822, graduated at Yale College in 1840 and, prior to his settlement had been pastor of the Eliot Church in Newton and of the First Presbyterian Church in Hudson, N. Y. His able sermons are still remem- bered by many of the congregation. Since the close of

2

10

his pastorate here he has retired from the active min- istry.

Rev. Herbert W. Lathe, minister from 1882 to 1891, has held pastorates at Pasadena, California, and at Manitou and Silverton, Colorado, and is now living at San Diego, California.

The present minister, Rev. Henry Terbell Rose, was installed February 18, 1892.

The first meeting house, 26 feet by 18 feet, and 9 feet high, was erected in 1655, and was used for all public assemblages ; the second, 42 feet square, in 1664, in Mr. Mather's ministry ; the third, in 1737, in Mr. Ed- wards's ministry ; the fourth in 1812, in Mr. Williams's ministry. This last, the "Old Church," was destroyed by fire in 1876. All these buildings were of wood. The present church building was completed in 1878, in Mr. Leavitt's ministry. In 1888 a fire burnt out the interior, which was restored in its present form in 1889.

Two Northampton churches have sprung directly from this church, the Second Congregational Society (Unitarian), organized in 1825, and the Edwards church, founded in 1833.

Form of Admission to the Church.

When any present themselves to be admitted to the Church, their names being read, they shall come to the open space before the Com- munion Table, and they standing there the Minister may repeat some of these words of Holy Scripture :

What shall I render unto the Lord for all His benefits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all His people.

We are journeying unto the place of which the Lord said, I will give it you; come thou with us and we will do thee good; for the Lord hath spoken good con- cerning Israel.

Come ye children hearken unto me, and I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Wilt thou not from this time cry unto Him, My Father, Thou art the guide of my youth ?

With the heart man believeth unto righteousness ; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Whereas in the former time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenant of promise, having no hope and without God in the world; ye now are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and of the household of God ; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone.

Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of Him in peace, without spot, and blameless,

11

12

Then the Minister shall say :

The Lord Jesus Christ witnessed a good confession be- fore Pontius Pilate when He said, To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. And we remember how for our assurance He hath promised that whosoever shall confess Him before men, him He will confess before the Father which is in Heaven. It is very right and fitting then, that you here present, making acknowledgment of the infinite mercy, should profess yourself a servant and disciple of Jesus, and ask to be received into membership in His Church.

CONFESSION.

Relying upon the tender mercy and gracious assistance of God and disclaiming any worthiness of myself, I do now promise in the presence of the Lord, the Searcher of all hearts, and before this company, first and chiefly to cleave forever unto God with my whole heart, as my chief, best, yea and only good ; and unto Jesus Christ as my Saviour and Lord, the Prophet, Priest and King of our salvation. And for the furthering of this holy communion with God the Father, and Christ Jesus His Son, and the Holy Spirit of God the Teacher, Guide and Comforter of souls, I do now engage to maintain, observe and follow the holy in- structions and ordinances which God hath appointed for His Church .*

I hope I truly find in my heart a willingness to comply with all the Commandments of God, which require me to give up myself wholly to Him, and to serve Him with my body and my spirit ; and accordingly do now promise to walk in a way of obedience to all the Commandments of God, so long as I live.t

Do you now make this Confession ?

* Adapted from the "Form of Words expressing the Church Cove- nent, entered into the eighteenth of the fourth [month], 1661, by those that then begun that work, and afterward by such as were admitted into Church Estate and subscribed their names thereunto."

+ Form proposed by Jonathan Edwards, 1750.

13

Here, if there be occasion for it, the Sacrament of Baptism shall be administered. And if any are to be received by letter, their names shall be read ; and then the Minister shall read this

COVENANT.

You do now publicly take hold of the Covenant of the Lord, giving up yourself to be one of His. Subjecting yourself to the teaching and government of Jesus Christ in this Church, you engage according to your place and power to promote the welfare thereof ; and you will seek the help of the Spirit, that you may accompany this your confession by a pure, upright and useful life.

Do you so covenant and promise ?

Here the members of the Church will rise.

We do here publicly acknowledge you a member of this Church, promising to act toward you in brotherly love, to seek your best spiritual good, to take care of your instruc- tion in the Lord,* and to unite with you in our common prayers, counsels and works, to the end that we all may be faithful unto death, and may receive the crown of life. These things we do all promise in full sincerity as before the Lord, the Examiner of all hearts, beseeching Him so to bless us as we shall truly endeavor by His grace the faith- ful observation of the same. And when we through weak- ness shall fail, then will we wait and rely upon our Lord Jesus Christ for pardon, acceptance and healing for His name's sake.+

The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gra- cious unto you.

The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

AMEN.

* Adapted from the "Form of Words expressive of the sense of the Covenant to be used at the admission of members into Full Com- munion, November 5, 1672."

+ From the original Covenant, adopted June 18, 1661.
