CONFESSION AND COVENANT.

FORM OF ADMISSION.

ADDRESS.

BELOVED FRIENDS :

You have presented yourselves before God, and His church, and the world, to make a solemn profession of the faith of the Gospel, and to take upon you its everlasting obligations. We trust that you have well considered the nature of this trans- action, as it is the most momentous in which you can engage, and as it will be recorded in heaven, to be called up again at the judgment of the great day. Nor need you be overwhelmed. If you are really honest in this profession ; if you are really desirous to know all the truth, and to do all the will of God, He will make you wise by his wisdom, and strong by His strength. And He, who can be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, will never leave you, nor forsake you.

Please attend to the

CONFESSION OF FAITH.

You believe that there is but one God; self-exist- ent, eternal, and unchangeable ; infinite in power,

4

wisdom, holiness, justice, mercy, goodness, and truth ; and revealed to us, in the plan of salvation, under the name of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Isa. 44 : 6. Ps. 90: 2. James 1: 17. Job 11 : 7. Matt. 28: 19. 2 Cor. 13: 14. John 1: 1, 3, 10. Rev. 22: 13. 1 Cor. 1: 2. Acts 1: 24; 5: 3. John 14: 16, 26.

You believe that the Scriptures, of the Old and New Testament, were given by the inspiration of God, and that they are a perfect rule of faith and practice.

Luke 24 : 27. 2 Pet. 1: 21. 2 Tim. 3: 16. John 14: 10; 16: 13; 14: 26. Gal. 1: 12. 1 Cor. 2 : 13. 1 Thess. 2: 13.

You believe that man has fallen from his original holiness ; and that, so desperate is his wickedness, he will not love and obey God, until the Holy Spirit brings him to repentance, or regenerates his heart.

Gen. 1: 27. Rom. 5: 12, 15, 19; 7: 18; 8: 8. Ps. 51 : 5. Rom. 7 : 23, 24. John 5: 40; 6: 65; 16: 8; 3: 3.

You believe that God has given his Son to be the propitiation for the sins of the whole world ; and that whosoever will, may believe on Him to everlasting life.

1 John 2: 2. Rom. 3: 25. Matt. 26: 28. Eph. 1:7. John 1: 29. Matt. 11: 28. John 3: 16, 36. Rev. 22 : 17.

You believe that God has purposed to bring to faith in Christ, as many of our ruined race as He can, in the methods of His wisdom, and in accord-

5

ance with the good pleasure of His will; and that all such will be kept by His power unto final sal- vation.

2 Pet. 3: 9. Eze. 33: 11. 2 Thess. 2: 13. Eph. 1: 4. Rom. 8 : 29, 30. 1 Pet. 1: 2. John 10: 26-29. Phil. 1: 6. John 6: 39.

You believe that God hath appointed a day, on which all must meet Him in judgment, for the deeds done here in the body; and that the wicked will then go away into everlasting punishment, and the righteous into life eternal.

Acts 17: 31. Rom. 2: 16. 2 Cor. 5: 10. Matt. 25: 46; 10: 28. John 5: 29. 1 John 5: 16. 2 Thess. 1: 9. Rom. 2 : 7, 8. John 3: 36. Mark 9 : 43, 44.

You believe that the perpetual ordinances of the Gospel, are Baptism and the Lord's Supper; that none are proper subjects of the former, but believers and their households, and that none are entitled to the latter, but members of the visible church, in regular standing.

Matt. 28: 19. Mark 16: 16. Acts 2: 38. Gen. 17: 10, 11. 1 Cor. 1: 16. Luke 22 : 19. 1 Cor. 11 : 25; 5: 11. 2 Thess. 3: 6, 14.

Thus you truly profess and believe.

BAPTISM.]

You will now enter into covenant with God and with this Church.

6

COVENANT.

In the presence of God, and this assembly, you do now solemnly avouch the Lord Jehovah, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, to be your God, the supreme object of your affections, and your portion forever.

You cordially acknowledge the Lord Jesus Christ to be your Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit to be your Sanctifier, Comforter and Guide. You humbly and cheerfully devote yourselves to. God, in the everlasting covenant of His grace, consecrating all your powers and faculties to His service and glory.

You purpose and engage to cleave to Christ as your chief good ; to obey, by His help, all His com- mandments and ordinances ; to give your days and your strength to the spread of the Gospel ; and that. henceforth, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, you will live soberly, righteously and godly, in this. present world.

You do also now cordially join yourselves to this church ; and engage to submit to its government. and discipline ; to strive earnestly for its peace, edi- fication and purity ; and to walk with its members in love, faithfulness, circumspection, and meekness.

Thus you heartily agree and promise.

[MEMBERS RISE.]

7

We, then, the members of this Church, do affec- tionately receive you into our communion ; and in the name of Christ, declare you entitled to all its visible privileges. We welcome you to this fellow- ship with us in the blessings of the Gospel ; and on our part, engage to watch over you, to seek your edification, and your spiritual and eternal good.

[MEMBERS SIT.]

Thus, beloved in the Lord-and be it never for- gotten - have you come under obligations from which you cannot escape. Wherever you go, these vows will go with you. They will follow you to the bar of God, and abide upon you forever. And may the great Head of the Church guide you and keep you till death ; and at last receive you and us to that world, where the forms of earth shall not be needed, but where holiness, and love, and joy, shall be for- ever perfect. Amen.

PRIVATE RESOLUTIONS OF PRESIDENT EDWARDS.

Resolved, Never to lose one moment of time; but improve it the most profitable way I possibly can.

Resolved, To study the Scriptures so steadily, constantly, and frequently, as that I may find, and plainly perceive myself to grow in. knowledge. of. the same.

8

Resolved, To live so at all times, as I think is best in my devout frames, and when I have clearest notions of things of the Gospel, and another world.

Resolved, Never to speak any thing that is ridic- ulous, or matter of laughter, on the Lord's day.

Resolved, In narrations never to speak any thing but the pure and simple verity.

Resolved, Never to do any thing out of revenge ; nor suffer the least motions of anger towards irra- tional beings.

Resolved, To strive to my utmost every week to be brought higher in religion, and to a higher exer- cise of grace, than I was the week before.

Resolved, To inquire every night, as I am going to bed, wherein I have been negligent, what sin I have committed, and wherein I have denied myself; also, at the end of every week, month and year.

Resolved, After afflictions, to inquire what I am the better for them, what good I have got by them, and what I might have got by them.

Resolved, Frequently to renew the dedication of myself to God, which was made at my baptism, and which I solemnly renewed when I was received into the communion of the church.

Resolved, Constantly, with the utmost niceness and diligence, and the strictest scrutiny, to be look- ing into the state of my soul, that I may know whether I have truly an interest in Christ, or no ; that when I come to die, I may not have any negli- gence respecting this to repent of.

Resolved, I will act so as I think I shall judge. would have been best, and most prudent, when I come into the future world.

Resolved, Never to give over, nor in the least to slacken my fight with my corruptions, however unsuccessful I may be.
