CONFESSION OF FAITH.
Being a summary briefly and for substance of Doctrinal Belief.
We, as a church, believe in one eternal Almighty God, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, who made the world by his power, and governs it by his providence.
We believe, the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be the word of God, and adhere to them as the only perfect rule of faith and practice.
We believe, that our first parents fell from that state of integrity, honor and happiness, in which God at first created them; and that upon their eating the forbidden fruit, they involved themselves and all their posterity in a state of sin and deatlı.
We believe, that God, in compassion to the sinful, per- ishing state of mankind, fore-ordained, and in the fulness of time, sent his only begotten Son, to be the Saviour of the world; and that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, in compliance with his Father's will, took upon him the nature of man, and therein humbled himself in his obe- dience unto death, for our redemption.
We believe, that he rose again on the third day, and ascended into heaven, and there sits at the right hand of God, making intercession for us; and that he has power given him over all things in heaven and earth.
We believe, that he executes the three-fold office of
4
Prophet, Priest and King; and that in the exercise of his office as Redeemer, and in the fulness of the power committed to him, he has published his gospel covenant, requiring faith and repentance of sinful man, in order to pardon and salvation.
We believe, that the Holy Ghost is given through the merits and mediation of Christ, to make application of his purchased redemption to the souls of men ; and that his gracious influence is necessary to a life of faith and new obedience.
We believe, that Christ has instituted his Church, with its Gospel ministry, and its Sacraments of Baptism and the Lord's Supper, as the outward means of the appli- cation of redemption, to be maintained and observed until his second coming.
Finally, we believe in another life after this; that Christ will appear again to raise the dead and judge the world ; that we must all appear before his judgment- seat, and that at the last day the wicked will be adjudged to everlasting punishment and the righteous to life eternal.
To this do you consent?
,
THE COVENANT.
Being the public engagement with God and with the Church, into which those enter who unite with the Church.
You, and each of you, do this day choose the Lord to be your God, to walk in his ways, keep his statutes and his commandments, and to hearken to his voice ; and therefore you do give up yourselves, (yourself) with all that you have and are, unto the Lord Jehovah, the true and living God, in three persons, the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, as your God and father in Christ Jesus, to be for him, and no other, and that with repentance of all your sins ; professing and promising by Divine grace to renounce the idols and vanities of this present evil world.
You do give up yourselves (yourself) to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Mediator, in all his offices ; as your Prophet, to teach you by his word and spirit ; as your Priest, to make atonement and intercession for you with God; and as your King, to govern you and present you to his heavenly kingdom.
You do moreover give up yourselves (yourself) to the Holy Spirit, in all his influences by the word, as your sanctifier, comforter and guide to glory.
Desirous of being visibly numbered among Christian believers, and owning us to be a true Church of Christ, you do give up yourselves, (yourself) to the Lord's people

in this his Church, professing and promising through the help of Divine grace, to enter with sincerity, faithfulness and love into its fellowship, its counsels, prayers and labors, and to submit to the order, discipline and gov- ernment professed and practiced therein ; and that you will endeavor in all things to walk as becomes the Gospel of. Christ.
To this Covenant do you seriously and solemnly consent?
In token of the Covenant between God and the Christian be- liever, the ordinance of Baptism is administered to those who have not been baptised in infancy : and they also who were bap- tised in their infancy are understood to enter fully for them- selves into the Christian engagements and blessings made and sought in their behalf by their believing parents at their baptism.
[The church here rise. ]
We, the Church of the Lord, in this place, do now receive you into our most sacred fellowship, and declare you members (a member) in full communion with us, promising to watch over you, and that for your good, as long as it shall please God to continue you among us, with a spirit of meekness, love, and tenderness ; implor- ing of our Lord Jesus Christ, that both we and you, may find mercy to prove faithful in the covenant, and glorify him in that holiness which becometh his house forever. The Lord bless you and keep you : The Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you : The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Amen.
PRINCIPLES AND RULES OF THE CHURCH.
1. A CHRISTIAN CHURCH is a company of professed followers of Christ, organized for the purposes of mutual counsel and helpfulness, the observance of the Christian sacraments, the maintenance of Christian worship and instruction, and the extension of the kingdom of Christ in the world. Such a body, under Christ, who is its only Head, is competent to choose its officers, admit its mem- bers, administer its discipline, and do all other acts necessary to the attainment of these purposes.
2. A Church, though thus independent of external authority, is bound in relations of mutual care and com- munion with other Churches ; and this Church will, in all ordinary cases, conform to the usages of fellowship as established among Congregational Churches.
3. The permanent officers of this Church shall be a Pastor, or Pastors, and Deacons.
4. This Church will also choose each year, at its annual meeting, the following additional officers, namely : A Clerk ; an Examining Committee of five, of which the Pastor and Deacons shall form a part; a Committee for Home Charities, to act in connection with the Dea- cons; a Committee of Discipline ; a Board of Directors of the Sabbath School, three in number, who shall pro-

vide with respect to the annual appointment of the Superintendent and other officers, shall exercise a gen- eral care for its efficiency, and shall make report from time to time concerning it to the Church; also an Auditor of Accounts; together with the necessary com- mittees for the care of the ministerial library, and for any other purpose that may be judged desirable.
5. The funds of the Church shall be in the keeping of the Deacons, one of whom shall be designated to act as Treasurer, and shall report to the Church at its annual meeting.
6. The Annual Meeting of the Church shall be held, unless changed by special vote, on the Monday evening following the last Sabbath of the year. There shall also be held once during each month, at such time as the Church shall direct, a regular meeting of the Church for the transaction of business, and for consultation with respect to the interests of the Lord's Kingdom among us. Business pertaining to the Church, other than the appropriation of money, may also be transacted in con- nection with the assemblies for public worship on the Sabbath, at the Preparatory Lecture, and at other meet- ings of the Church, if occasion shall require.
But care shall be taken that the notice given, and the proportion of members present, be answerable to the importance of the subject to be acted upon ;- it being in all cases understood that the rules of Christian propriety and fairness are to be held as of fundamental authority in this Church.
9
7. The Communion of the Lord's Supper shall be regularly obserred on the first Sabbath in January, March, May, July, September and November. And the Preparatory Lecture shall be on the evening of each Fri- day before the Communion.
8. A meeting of the Church for Prayer and Confer- ence shall be held, ordinarily, as for many years from the past, on the Friday evening of each week ; and it is earnestly desired that all members shall attend, so far as they may be able, at this meeting; or upon some other of a similar nature, special reference being had to the meeting for Young People, ordinarily held upon each Tuesday evening.
9. Persons not belonging to other churches, who apply for membership with us, having been approved by the Examining Committee, and propounded for at least one week, may be admitted by vote of the Church, and may become members upon publicly assenting to the Articles of Faith and Covenant.
10. Letters of recommendation from other churches shall be first submitted to the Examining Committee, and the persons bringing them may be received as mem- bers, by vote of the Church.
11. Members of this Church removing to other towns, or attending at other places of worship, are expected to ask for letters of dismissal and recommendation to the Church with which they are worshiping, within one
T
10
year after their removal, or, otherwise, they will give special reasons for delay, and will make each year some report to the Church concerning their Christian welfare ; and in no case will the connection of any person with this Church be considered dissolved until written notice has been received by the Clerk of his admission in the Church to which he was recommended.
12. Members of other churches wishing to commune with this Church for more than one year, are desired to request letters of dismissal and recommendation to this Church, unless there are special reasons for delay.
13. If ever offences requiring censure are charged upon any member of this Church, these may not be re- garded as a matter to be spread abroad by public and scandalous report ; neither are they to be privately kept as an occasion of hatred; but they are to be treated according to the rules of Christian watchfulness and discipline laid down in the Scriptures.
14. No member of the Church should be absent habitually, and without sufficient Providential reasons, from its communion and worship ; nor should any mem- ber fail to contribute in some manner, as he may be able, to the support of its public ministrations ; and any such continued absence or failure must be regarded as a violation of the intent of the Covenant in which we are united as a Church.
15. This Church regards it as an important part of Christian duty to assist in sending the Gospel through-
-
11
out the world ; and to this end regular collections shall be made among the members of the Church and Parish, in accordance with such a system as may be judged most appropriate ; and the funds so raised shall be in the care of the Treasurer of the Church, unless otherwise directed by special vote.
16. These Rules of the Church shall only be changed after due notice, given in the calling of the meeting at which the change is proposed to be made.
NAMES OF PASTORS.
The stated preaching of the gospel was commenced in Salem Village, now Danvers, in 1672. The inhabitants had worshiped previously, with the First Church in Salem. The first preacher was James Bailey. His services were continued until near the beginning of 1680. He was succeeded by George Burroughs in Nov., 1680. Mr. Burroughs closed his ministry in 1683. On the 19th of Aug., 1692, he was executed, on a charge of witchcraft, on Gallows Hill, in Salem. He was followed by Deodat Lawson, whose labors continued from 1684 to 1688.
Samuel Parris was the first Pastor of the Church. This gentleman was born in London. He was ordained at the time of the organization of the Church, which took place Nov. 19th; 1689. His ministry closed in June, 1696. It was in his family that the Salem witchcraft originated. His dismission was occasioned by difficul- ties with his people, growing out of this delusion.
Joseph Green, the next Pastor, was settled Nov. 10th, 1698 ; and died Nov. 26th, 1715. He was succeeded by Peter Clark, who was ordained June 5th, 1717 ; and who died June 10th, 1768. His successor was Benjamin Wadsworth, who was settled Dec. 23d, 1772, and died Jan. 18th, 1826. The ministries of Messrs. Clark and Wadsworth comprised a period of 104 years. Milton P. Braman, became Pastor April 12th, 1826 ; and resigned March 31st, 1861.
Charles B. Rice, the present Pastor, was installed Sept. 2, 1863.
